Our best recruitment was with Vieira. Doogie was one of those players like Danny Graham and Chung Yong Lee who look great in the second tier but get found out in the top tier, and he tends to pick players like that (Rakip, Sorloth, Hughes) - his overall record is mixed (Meyer!!!), more good than bad but nothing special - I think he did a better job as manager here than Sporting Director - Hodgson hasn't always been immediately on board with some of Doofie's signings and his diffidence has generally been vindicated. I would have signed Meyer. Not now, in retrospect, but at the time. Looked a gift given his youth international pedigree. Didn't work sadly.

I noticed Campana (sorry about the accent thing) ended up very good. Don't think that was Freedman but can't remember. Interesting contrast. Of the two, you'd think the one that would have worked out is Meyer. I believe Meyer plays quite low down these days whereas Campana made a bit of a decent career for himself with a few international call ups later on. I guess all signings are a bit of an unknown - there's no one who's only signed good players. I think even Brighton have signed a couple of duffers. And Chelsea and Man U spring to mind.

Momeyballs favours a set team and continuity. The latter teams you mention have never learned that but opt for throwing endless eye watering levels of cash at the squad. Constant rotation and poor results. Man City and Liverpool keep a more set team and only tinker (albeit when they buy £££). The outcome is as seen.

Meyer is gradually rebuilding his career after a couple of years in the wilderness. Still only 28 he was Lucerne’s top scorer last year and the highest scoring midfielder in Switzerland. Roy did not want him so only played him occasionally and usually as a sub in a defensive left sided midfield role when the team was losing. Sounds familiar? Roy’s regular tactic to prove to SP and DF that a player hid did not approve of is c**p. He didn’t succeed with Sorloth but is trying it again with Mateta, Ahamada etc.

This post has been merged from a topic called 'Freedman to Utd?' by becky This was mentioned last week but has exploded today on an awful lot of click-bait sites. Sir JR/Ineos want Dougie to be head of recruitment at Utd & according to reports PDQ. Will Dougie jump ship again, how long is there on his contract? Thoughts? [Link] Sorry, just seen there is another thread on this subject, that'll teach me not to look properly. Mods please delete or merge. Edited by eagleman13 (05 Mar 2024 11.23am)
This operation, will make the 'Charge Of The Light Brigade' seem like a simple military exercise. |

It’s hard to turn down a gig at Man Utd. He’s had a tough time at Palace recruiting player that Roy never used and rarely seeing his efforts come to fruition and even worse, leave and do well elsewhere. Sorloth is a prime example. Rarely played for us and never looked like a striker but scoring goals for fun before he came and since he left. Dougie has struggled to win over the fans who remember how he deserted us as a manager but for me he has done well. We have an academy filled with promising youngsters and by all accounts he played a huge part in persuading Glasner to come to us. Given Glasner’s history of falling out with owners over recruitment his apparent good relationship with Dougie is important. I hope he sees the opportunity to finally see his efforts bear fruit with a coaching team who he can work closely with to build an exciting young team.

“That’s a joke son, I say, that’s a joke.” “Nice boy, but he’s sharp as a throw pillow.” “He’s so dumb he thinks a Mexican border pays rent” “ “Son… I say, son, some people are so narrow minded they can look through a keyhole with both eyes.”__ Forhorn Leghorn |

I'm not surprised that Dougie's work is again under the spotlight at Man U. He's done a brilliant job for us with the limited funds at his disposal. We all know that money talks, but I for one hope he would prefer to be part of our re-structuring. Ollie has certainly said positive things about him in his first few weeks with us.
Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled. |

I refuse to believe that there is any truth in this. I still stand by the fact that apart from Franca, DF hasn't signed anyone that wasn't already pretty well know.
