This will continue to go down as the most frustrating and unpopular bit of business I've ever seen the club do.

Henderson is the top earner at our club, on £100k per week. He is a reserve goalkeeper, and not even a very good one. Blowing so much of our budget on him and then not being able to sign anyone in the areas we needed is, I'm afraid, genuinely unforgivable. It never seemed good business, and whoever ratified that deal is fully to blame for the predicament we find ourselves in.

Parish may well tell us that everyone thinks they know how to run a football club, and the reality is harder than you think. That is, I'm sure, true. But spending a high percentage of any businesses available funds not just now but for the next five years too (5 year contract at £100k per week), shows serious incompetence and/or lack of judgement. The transfers team, Dougie Freedman, and the Board who signed off that decision, have utterly shafted those managing the team, as well as the fans.

How many good players in positions we needed could we have signed for that money?

If there is a banner shown at our next game, perhaps it should read "Henderson for £20m and no wingers - which clown signed that off?"

The explanation I have seen for Henderson's signing last summer is that Guiata's bust up with the club meant that Johnstone was our only goalkeeper with any Premier League experience.

Apparently he has a £10 million release clause in his contract and we were worried that Manchester Utd would buy Pickford from Everton to try and solve their goalkeeping problem and Everton would then trigger the release clause in Johnstone's contract.

So we decided it was better to have two goalkeepers with PL experience than none and purchased Henderson while he was available.

Indeed

However any sporting director worth their salt, goes to Johnstone in say April, and says

We've brought you back to the Prem, made you our no1, and helped get you back into the England squad. This clause in your contract is causing us huge issues, that if we cant resolve with a nice little pay rise, will leave us no option but to go to market to sign a new number 1. We'll have to promise the no1 jersey to convince them to sign. And we'll have to play them, limiting your chances of going to the Euros

Yet Johnson signed a new deal in November which I guess removed the release clause or at least substantially increased it . He was at the time established as our No 1 , in The England squad and everyone ,manager and Chairman included were singing his praises .

This was a couple of months after we had signed Henderson . Something doesn't add up .

Unless of course Johnstone is carrying a knock which makes this thread is as barking as most on here in the last few days

COYP !

Johnstone in my book is the better keeper. Henderson against Brighton was all over the place and his handling was shocking!

I think Henderson is the nimbler of the two and has the sharper reflexes. Both good, though.

One of the more bizarre responses I've ever had to a post.

Not necessarily agreeing with him but as CP is a business and not fan owned do we have a right to know every reason why decisions our made when buying players, just saying.

Any info on if Sam is back in the team against Sheffield? I presume so but haven't seen/heard anything.

Doubt it, Forest put a bid in for him, loan with obligation to buy, but it was rejected, still, you never know, we'll find out at 19.00(GMT)

This operation, will make the 'Charge Of The Light Brigade' seem like a simple military exercise.

Well they obviously rank Johnstone higher than Henderson, given that they had the latter on loan last year and had no interest in signing him.

I assume that the plan was always to sell Johnstone on the basis that is no good having two first-choice options on the squad especially with few Cup games and he is the older by a few years. However, Henderson has looked pretty iffy to date

I heard quite some time ago Sam Johnstone and his family wish to move back up north.
The beautiful south just doesn't suit some people.
Fair enough.
He's been professional and patient àbout it.
But if he's unsettled probably best for the club to gain a decent fee and wish him good luck.
