The thing is what is the next level? most clubs in the PL and a few in the championship are in essence the same, unless you are owned by a oligarch or a country there is no next level, the big clubs can buy the players they want, very few players will turn down a megabucks move.

It is, and it is as much a punishment as it is a reward. In a logical structure, teams would be able to aim for Europa League football and use it as a basecamp from which to develop their teams even further, hopefully into Champions League hopefuls. In reality, anyone our size who finishes 7th immediately has to choose between having a decent crack at Europe at the expense of the league, or the opposite. Modern football. It's s***.

I don't really understand this vision that giving the club over to somebody with loads of money means guaranteed success. It doesn't. It means spending lots of money on supposedly good players but it doesn't guarantee you a good manager nor players that want to fight for the badge. Hence why DF and Parish always spout on about finding the right players. It also doesn't help the fact that Selhurst is still in a bloody horrid place for it to expand unless you build a new stadium elsewhere. It also doesn't get away from FFP. Palace doesn't bring in lots of money and is reliant on selling assets to cover that.... it seems to me that DF has found quite a few young assets lately which can be sold and we now have an academy producing some young talent which will hopefully show more as the years go on. There are plenty of teams around us, below us and only just above us with billionaire owners. Brighton have done very well to get where they are but they still have to sell lots of their players and find new ones. They have done this with ample success of late because Chelsea are completely insane with throwing money at players. Could Parish do better? Most likely, but he is human. Does anybody reasonably think Textor has the clubs interests at heart? The other 2 Americans have their sights on other sports franchises in the US, and they probably don't pay attention to Selhurst Park because it's such a headache to expand and upgrade.

For me yes. But not expecting it every season. Once every, say, 5 years it would be lovely to have an FA Cup run to Wembley, or away at Quarabag FK.

We have already made a step up in ascending above the main candidate pool for relegation each season. I would therefore describe the next step up as having a competitive first XI, where we have a squad with players still trying to break into it as opposed to glaring holes which then make us look very vulnerable with sometimes only a single absentee. Once we have that, relegation may become so distant a thought we do actually turn our attention to the cups and perhaps confidently assess where we will be finishing within the top half, and if we can achieve a European spot, as opposed to 'will we be relegated or not?' and 'when is so-and-so back as we're nothing and getting relegated without him?' etc. Just my opinion of course.
Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!! |
