I'm not knocking Dann's point, which I think is largely true, but what happened at Man U was quite amazing.

They won the league with kids making more than half the side.

Gary Neville (twenty), Paul Scholes (twenty), Ryan Giggs (twenty-one), Phil Neville (eighteen), Nicky Butt (twenty), and substitute appearances from David Beckham (twenty) and John O'Kane (twenty).

I agree, but wasn't this also what Alan Hansen said about Man U twenty odd years ago?

Yes, but that was an exceptional batch of youngsters that were already in the first team, ours are far from that and judging by other clubs under 21 performances in that competition, it appears it’s the same elsewhere

They're not there to win it - the whole point is to give academy players more exposure to men's football and hopefully help with an eventual transition into the senior game.

No team of kids should ever be winning a tournament full of adult teams, nor should they be expected to.

I wasn't suggesting they should. I was merely trying to underline Monkey's response to Aero re the claim we should be hammering such teams.

Let's face it the best youngsters at Palace (and other clubs with elite academies) will generally:
a) already be playing in the 1st team or
b) be out on loan at other clubs especially in Leagues 1, 2 and the Championship.
Consequently, those that remain can't be expected to do more than win or draw the occasional match against a L1 or 2 men's team. AS you say, it's all about getting the experience (and possibly showing them that they aren't yet as good as they may think they are). I suspect Franca is getting a rude awakening.

Yes, it appears that sometimes we get a little too excited by our academy products.

Though I'm hearing that Ola-Adebomi played well and scored and won his aerial and ground duels.

I suspect that lad will make it.

The class of 92 was a freak. All great players but who did Man United produce after that? I think the next very good player was Rashford so a big gap between those dates.

Yeah it's curious what happened there....Wasn't Nicky Butt from that era as well.

To go from academy graduates like that to basically what they have now is quite something. Obviously I don't follow them so don't know what went wrong. I

I didn't but I've just looked him up on Transfermarkt.
Dan Quick went on a free to Eastbourne Borough in National League South and has played regularly for them at Centre Back (He was a CB with us as I recall) although in and out of the starting XI (5 starts and 9 Sub appearances)

Was on loan to Dorking Wanderers in the National league but didn’t get regular starts.

looking at the highlights it looks like our goalie did not have a great game and this had an impact on the result. Personally i think these games are a great benchmark for the youngsters (who have probably been only exposed to matches against players around the same age ) to measure themselves against a team of more experienced professional players. This will shatter a few delusions about how good they think they might be and give them an idea on what level they need to get to make it as a pro.
