With all the usual caveats about training and fitness I suspect maybe two, three at a stretch, would make the current team and that's including Kenny Sansom. Great as they were, we just have to accept that the game has moved on, and by quite a bit. Players now are and have to be far better athletes. Sports science has transformed how basic talent is handled and developed. Let’s face it British football hadn’t even fully come terms with dietary issues. Playing surfaces we have didn’t exist. The chances are most were going on the sherbet mid week, that wouldn’t get you past the medics now, let alone in the team.

That is all very true, especially the pitches, but similarly how would today's players have coped with the physicality (read brutal tackling, especially from behind) which was commonplace?

London is an absolute hotbed of talent and we are now a stable, well run Premier League club with an outstanding academy. There is no reason that young players shouldn't choose us over the likes of Arsenal, Spurs or Chelsea for their development but the caveat is that we have to offer a pathway to professional football. I agree with the original poster in that we shouldn't use the academy as an excuse for not spending on players. However, there is also absolutely nothing wrong with the idea that the academy can't produce players for us to either use or sell for profit. Look at Trevor Chalobah for example. He's come through the Chelsea academy and only played about 40 odd games for them and they're now asking for about £40m for him. It might take a couple of years for the new academy to bear fruit but there's no reason we can't start doing that too. Worth saying as well that I absolutely think we've got the wrong manager for this. Someone like Steve Cooper or (I can't believe I'm about to say this) Gareth Southgate with a track record of trusting young players would be ideal for this strategy. Money All offer the same pathway. Academy is not about producing to use people at our club it's a business model to make money something Mr Parish has even hinted at when he would speak about wanting model like Chelsea (They had no interest in these players being starters for them but churning out to make money) You can't be serious about wrong manager for a start it has nothing to do with the manager and Southgate is a poor knock off Roy.

That’s a good point Ted, I really don’t know if the modern player ,with all of his feigning injury, the much greater lenience with manhandling shirt tugging Etc, would cope with some of the very real body busting stuff that went on then ,very often on a water logged pitch, leaving no escape route for even the fleet ot foot .

There lies an interesting question Teddy. How would our team of home grown players from the 80’s got on against our current strongest 11? Is buying foreign more hype than reality and should we be bringing on more of our homegrown players? How many home grown players in the whole of England during the 70s and 80s, im sure there's more but the only 2 players I can think of is keegan and hoddle. Our football was technically terrible until the late 90s maybe even later.

I think of players like Muhren and Thijssen at Ipswich, Ardiles etc etc who changed the idea of technical ability over grafting.

It's all relative isn't it? One Christian Benteke, his initial fee and wages over six seasons would probably have paid for the academy handsomely.

Keep reading posts saying how we should be bringing through youth, we've invested in the academy, we're cat A ect. Defending the clubs transfer strategy, instead of wasting money use the academy and produce players. 5% of players playing in the Premier league come through Premier league academies, that's about 25 players. On average, players in the prem are probably between 18-34 so that's every Premier league club producing 1.3 players a season between them. You're living in dream world if you think we're going to be consistently producing players to a Premier league standard. Its the best league in the world, full of the best players in the world, so already you have a population of 70 million competing against 8 billion. Mathematically its impossible. You could chuck 100 million a year at the academy, it won't make a difference. What a clueless man. We have the best academy in this country possibly one of the best in the world. We have produced some of the best to walk the pitch. Can’t stand the negativity from this fella. Support the club and support the youth. Kind regards Reg

I suspect that having a Cat A academy will become increasingly important going forward. Not only in how the Premiership views clubs and treats them but in reputation and how perspective players view us. This is also why having an impressive stadium is also important. There is a certain truth to, 'build it and they will come'....club perception is very important.....As long as the investments are into long terms areas like these.
