I think there are 3 things that could be done to improve things as VAR could work with the right people involved and a change of how it's used. 1) have an ex-player/manager who understands the game in the room making VAR decisions not the same Refs that are all part of the 'Refs clique'. Can't see this making a Blind bit of difference. People say that ex-players who've been in that situation will be able To make the right decision - but if that's the case, then why are there so many post match debates on decisions, from ex-players? Quote 2) use Rugby example. Decisions shown on screen in stadium with live feed so everyone understands what is going on.

3) only allow each team 3 chances to question a decision. If it is overturned and a clear error then don't lose one of their available 3. American football/Tennis also use this rule and it seems widely accepted in both sports. I just don't think that this will make any difference. In the case of offside- the flag is still raised 'late', the system will be open to abuse (i.e. timeouts) and ultimately, the same people will be making the same decisions, which will include wrong calls. This might finally get the VAR used effectively as it has a place if people like Darren England are no longer in charge of it. There are 2 categories or VAR - those that *should* be categorical yes/no decisions- (i.e. Ball line tech ... and offside), and those that require some form of human Interpretation,(i.e. penalties & handballs) The Catagorical decisions need foolproof tech that cannot be misused/misinterpreted. I think that we can all see that Ball line technology is a good example, and Offside is not. Better Tech is required for Offsides. As for the interpretable decisions, This is where VAR should be a tool for the on-field refs to help and should be understood that each decision could be interpreted in a different way. Therefore, the end decision still may be 'interpreted' as incorrect and it should be accepted that these decisions are not black and white. The aim here is for the correct decision to be arrived at more often. I Would add that Slow-motion replays should be banned from the decision making process. Every tiny movement looks intentional in slow motion, and I think it causes more incorrect decisions than it corrects.

I think this is getting into dangerous territory. What will Liverpool ask/demand if they get the audio? Most likely it will just prove the incompetence. Then what? Liverpool have benefitted before from a number of questionable VAR decisions. All swings and roundabouts. Wolves had an apology for the lack of penalty in the game against Man U, there was never any suggestion of replaying etc.

It is poor old Sean Dyche I feel sorry for. Every week Everton get turned over because the officials are not doing their job properly. It also happened to him season after season when he was at Burnley. When is someone going to apologize to Sean?

Just listened to audio of VAR Liverpool cock up. It makes the VAR system seem even worse than what many of us feared. Only the technician, not the qualified referees seemed to know what was going on. Shockingly amateurish and chaotic. Within 5 seconds of the restart Darren England is made aware of his error. All he can manage is "Can't do anything" - pathetic. How about stopping the game, rectifying your mistake (awarding the goal) and then taking the consequences for not slavishly following a clearly inadequate/inappropriate VAR restart process. A complete lack of character shown mixed with a degree of arrogance. Just like when awarding the Villa penalty at Palace. He is not fit to referee or officiate as a VAR. Banning him for one weekend is not going to change his character.

I have now heard the VAR commentary from the Liverpool game as it has been made public. Absolutely unbelievable and truly shows what we all thought, it's a little boys club with huge ego's who are completely incompetent. Darren England and his assistant VAR were even questioned by the VAR operator as to their decision (and he is not there to be involved with decision making)who wanted to clarify that they were aware what the on-field decision was, they basically brushed him off and said check complete. Fair play to the assistant ref Michael Oliver who was saying the decision is wrong, you then hear the ref swear. Audio then heard saying there is nothing we can do....stop the game award the correct decision and take some responsibility! It all comes back to having the technology but the wrong people in charge of it ! I think Palace should request Darren England's commentary of his arrogant Villa decision too ! There is a running theme here....
Some people are like Slinkies … not really good for anything, but you can’t help smiling when you see one tumble down the stairs. |

I think Darren England needs to edit his LinkedIn profile: “I am a reliable, focused and driven individual. I set myself high personal and professional standards and expect the same from those I work with. I am exceptionally conscientious and methodical but I have learnt to adapt my approach when faced with the unexpected, finding ‘out of the box’ solutions when appropriate. I work well as part of a team and have excellent communication skills that I have used effectively to engage, support and motivate others.”

VAR has become a farce .Well the way its implemented has . The CL shows how its done with instant decisions ,they use a slightly different system to ourswhich apparently we were offered but turned it down as it takes the final say out of the refs hands . What makes me laugh , well I would cry otherwise is all the fellas at Stockley park turn up in full refs kit wiegh
