Southgate for me has done he very well as England manager although I’d suggest a lot of this has come about from his seemingly very good man management and morale building ability. I do however have far less faith in his ‘footballing genius’ if you like and therefore whilst the players may perform better when they’re all chummy and content the actual tactical approach can be lacking.

I think this is why we see the same players being kept around. If you look at our team now we have Bayern’s best striker, Real Madrids new wonderkid, a few starlets for a team dominating club football now (MCity) plus a load more top, top players to pick from. By keeping them all happy they’ll of course perform well but in tough situations I can’t see the manager taking initiative and thinking us out of it.

I also think this is why the likes of Eze may struggle a bit more to break through. As a Palace fan I also support our players and therefore would love it for Eze to feature more for his benefit (confidence, belief and experience) however the drawbacks may include injury, higher profile leading to his possible departure or even damage to confidence should something negative happen. Southgate seems to cling a bit more to that he knows and is reluctant to really shake things up or experiment, and he may be correct in this approach of course, but whatever happens my primary concern will always be Palace and our players. I’m inclined to believe Marc is massively maturing from the experience as a side note.

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!

So Marc did great against Ukraine and we all applaud him. Problem is the next game up on Tuesday a “Friendly” against Scotland. Am I being paranoid in thinking there is no way that I want to see Eze on the pitch for that game? I can just see him being hacked to pieces in this “Friendly” and him being out for many games. I would prefer that he waits for his next cap in a proper game.COYP

You’ve obviously not watched Scotland recently. Our passing game has seen us win all 5 of our qualifiers including victories over Spain and Norway. We don’t need to “hack” anyone and are capable of giving England a game any day. The days of looking forward to beating the Auld Enemy are long past. To be honest we could do without this meaningless friendly. We have bigger fish to fry!

Thought the game last night was crying out for him to be brought on but the dope in charge bottled it.

Those were the days though, back in the 70’s and early 80’s when I was a kid I used to love the England Scotland games in the home internationals, Scotland had some great players back then, although goalkeepers not so great

I could not agree more they have been exceptional recently and appear to be mustering a good competitive group of players for international level games.
Being of the older variety I am just slightly concerned that the “ Auld Enemy “ approach could return for one night only and Eze could suffer because of it. Your reassurance is iheartening.COYP

Back in those days most top clubs in England had 2 or 3 Scots and they were all good mates until the home internationals. Billy Bremner didn’t mind who he kicked! Of course we Scots like to remember the team of 67 who beat the world champions with Bremner and Law in the side, Jim Baxter playing keepie uppie to wind up the Rnglish players and 4 Celtic players who weeks later would be part of the first British team to win the European Cup! The win at Wembley 10 years later with the late great Gordon McQueen and Kenny Dalglish scoring lives in the memory too. Sadly the fans smashing the goal posts and taking the turf home with them probably hastened the end of those annual fixtures and it was all down hill for Scotland from there! Sadly I have to agree with you when it comes to our goalkeepers. Alex Ferguson famously ditched one of them for the FA cup final replay against Palace!

Sadly I'm not young and in fact am quite ancient.
I don't enjoy international football and don't find it a particularly high standard.
The World Cup and African Nations is very disruptive to domestic football.
Many of the decisions are taken for commercial reasons e.g the bloated nature and the move to have the World Cup every 2 years

Beat me to it, don't forget, our(Palace) most appearance holder is also Scottish, Jim Cannon(660 apps)

As an aside, of the current lot of players, Joel Ward is on 338 apps(11 behind Nigel Martyn) & then comes Jeff Schlupp on 203 apps. If Wilf had stayed, he was on 458 apps in 3rd place 22 behind Terry Long(2nd) . . . Sorry i was bored

TOO MUCH EXPOSURE TO FOOTBALL THESE DAYS.

Match of the Day with David Coleman Saturday Night then the Big Match sunday afternoon with Brian Moore and Jimmy Hill.

They were the glory days. Before Sky and satellite/internet changed our lives.

The international break drives me insane. As another poster said, we just get going and then have to stop again. Then wait and hope our internationals come back without injury or being knackered.

I always thought it would be better to do qualifying at the end of a season when it wasn’t a tournament year.
This way without the stops the premier league could finish start of may, off to international duty for a month or so and then a break.

Consistent premier league, and something to actually enjoy almost like a mini tournament on the years without World Cup or euros.

Villa on Saturday and John McGinn in midfield for Scotland on Tuesday. All he ever does is kick players. Would rather Ebs had nothing to do with it.
