so, to follow your logic. Considering the anarchy of modern Britain and the rise of China.......we should pack off Stonehenge and display it in Beijing.....to prevent a gang of hoodies from spray painting it with shyte about the Slave Trade ? yup. Sounds like a good idea. You, sir, are a Conservationist. I salute you. That may well happen at some point, as the majority here won't have any connection to anything indigenous to these isles. And if our decline reaches that level then maybe that'll be justified.

Yes we have lots of other peoples treasures and we have looked after them and cared for them when the locals didn't. Modern mass tourism means that countries now wants their stuff so they can make money off the back of it, not that I blame them but let's be honest about it. Really can you just run us through that one again, you know the one about the tories being 'the party of law and order'.

Lord Elgin bought the marbles from the local legal authorities who happened to be Turkish. Of course after Greece became independent they maintained the Turks had no right to do that. Edited by Badger11 (04 Sep 2023 4.47pm)

However, of all the empires that existed the British empire was the best one that ever existed. We actually improved humanity and living conditions compared to before, at much cost to our own poor. We built modern infrstructure and institutions that all of these countries still use today. God knows what would be the case otherwise. Most countries did worse once we left. I went to a boarding school for the deaf as Al-Fated has a deaf son. Al-Fayed funded the computer network in 6th formers bedrooms (of which I was one) which was nice of him. His son had 2 female bodyguards (one of whom was with him or nearby constantly) both were Irish and female. I remember seeing Al-Fated walking around the school with a posse of bodyguards in suits around him. He landed a helicopter on the football pitch and we all ran down to chat with the pilot.

Surely empires do both good and bad. Remember Monty Python's 'What have the Romans ever done for us?' We benefited from Roman culture and technology, as we did with the Normans. It also came with some death and harsh treatment. That is the way of things throughout human history.

You don't seem to have understood my point. I said that Empire was of its time. I didn't say that it's good to take over people....My point was that of all the empires that have existed the British one was the best. We improved countries, especially non European countries. Overall their numbers went up as did their life expectancy with infrastructure, education and institutions. Besides, you should be taken to task on some of this. The partition of India wasn't forced on them ...they literally decided on that themselves. All the murders and everything that happened with that were internal. Yet you blame us for it! The creation of Israel was literally a UN decision....Yet you blame the British! What? The Opium wars were bad but we never ran China. As for languages, well stop talking in English and start talking your own. No one ever made you live in England and no one makes you speak English or support an English club. You seem to spend a lot of time attacking the British/English. Edited by Stirlingsays (05 Sep 2023 3.38pm)

I've heard good stories like this about him. There were definitely positive aspects to Al-Fayed.
