It was the manner of his going slagged the club off and has continued to do so see him self as Arsenal through and though. Wilf all day, he's taken a pay cut to follow his dream. Good luck to the lad. I couldn't agree more.

Wilf leaving doesnt hurt but slightly saddens me. Edited by billtheglazier (25 Jul 2023 10.06am) Losing Wright was a bigger loss, his influence and goals got us to 3rd in the First Division and nearly won us the FA cup, if it wasn’t for Hughes. He left with his best years ahead of him, Zaha is towards the end of his career and injuries are starting to come more often.

No palace player apart from Kenny Sansom affected me so badly as when Ian Wright left, absolutely gutted. I was down in Cornwall when I heard he’d signed for Arsenal and I nearly jumped off Lizard Point!!! I think with Wrighty as well it was unexpected if I remember right, obviously long before 24 hour news channels, the internet on phones and all this forum and Twitter bollox with the constant rumours, most of them made up, I found out on teletext where we were staying on holiday.

Comparisons are rather pointless, but the simple fact is that Wilfred Zaha was a massive reason why Palace have stayed in the Premier League for a decade. He was a Palace for his entire footballing life, baring one failed season at United, and was the living embodiment of the club in this era. Ian Wright was prominent for a few seasons before departing and became a top class goalscorer who provided some brilliant moments in our history. Despite that, he only had three seasons in the top flight with Palace and wasn't even top scorer for two of those. Writing this, I still can't believe that Zaha has left to play in a Mickey Mouse league. He will regret it quite soon I suspect. My feeling is that it's still possible that we haven't seen the last of him in a Palace shirt.
