I cant help feeling underwhelmed and agree with the thread's title. I know Roy is not a bad appointment, but it doesn't feel like long term strategic planning. It would have felt better if he'd renewed before the end of thebseason. Being announced at the start of June, makes it look/feel like Parish was after other targets first. But onwards and upwards to a top half finish

Didn't want him to stay on and was really hoping we'd bring in Potter. However it's pointless complaining about it now. He'll be here until next summer and then, at a guess, the summer beyond that. The only real question now is are we going to actually have a go at improving this summer a la 21/22 (Guehi, Andersen, Edouard, Olise, Hughes) or is going to be more like 20/21 where our only paid fees were for Eze and Butland? So appointing Roy is fairly risk free and the players respect him, any other appointment would of had a large element of risk to be dragged into renegotiation.

I don't disagree with the sentiment, but nothing is risk free. Watford appointed Roy hoping he'd keep them up. Ultimately the feeling is around ambition. If the answer is that we've appointed Roy to cling onto the PL for 2 more season to finance the stand, that feels pretty meek. We've got the most exciting nucleus of a team we've had for decades. Now is the time to back ourselves.

Watford is not a fair comparison, their players had mentally checked out before Roy got there. I don’t know what you mean about “ backing ourselves “. I thought it was largely understood that financial circumstances mean that the course of action currently being taken by Parish makes the most sense. It’s frustrating I know. We aren’t far off being a decent team with a few well chosen additions

We aren’t far off being a decent team with a few well chosen additions But without any real comms from the board, we are all guessing at what the plan might be and the financial circumstances. All we see from the outside is an appointment which is safe at best and uninspiring at worst. We then all try to backfill as to the reasons why. I know there isn't much in the way of comms from board to fans, its just frustrating to see our peers (Brighton, Brentford, Fulham) seemingly pushing forward. All quicker than we are.

I was totally uninspired by the return of Roy last year, but I had to eat some humble pie. He did things that I didn't think he was capable of. I thought I'd be the last person to endorse his return. Ever the optimist, doesn't it give us a full season to now scope out a new long-term manager? Of course, we could still leave it until the last minute or see if we can eek out another year from Roy. In other words, we are kicking the can, but that can be a fun game when you haven't got a proper football. We just need to make sure we conduct a full and proper search for a very good football when we get to the end of the road with the can.

Ok I admit I was wrong about the dismissal of Viera and short term return of Roy and Ray, but not at all convinced giving them another year has any real benefit for the club. It to my mind shows there is little long term planning in place and hardly screams stability. Not sure players will want to come knowing he has a year or stay if they cannot see a long term vision for the club. To my mind this screams 'sticking plaster,' or more worrying, no one else wants the job

1 of 2 things will happen given this announcement. Roy will get the sack part way through the season and Parish will stick Paddy in until the end of the season in the hope he can become an immediate success and guide us to safety. Or Roy will guide us to mid table safety, Paddy will have spent a full season learning from Roy and Ray and will pick up the role the following season. Either way I look at it all things point to Paddy and those are the cheap options for Parish as he knows both Roy and Paddy will operate within the financial constraints he puts upon the club.
