It will without doubt make train travel FAR worse than it currently is.Where I live it will be far worse than "walking down the street". So east Croydon station would be worse than walking through the whitgift centre at 8pm.

Driverless busses are being trialled into Edinburgh but need two operators. One stand by driver to take over if there are any issues and one conductor. Thing is we already have driverless trains on the DLR and it’s a lot easier on rails. Planes are more or less becoming pilotless, with technology doing the lions share of the work. If I was a driver earning the sort of money they earn then the last thing I’d do is rock the boat and force Govt to look/push the alternative. I agree with the right to withdraw Labour but I also agree with the right to work and when those withdrawing their Labour earn more than most of the commuters they ferry into towns and cities, preventing them from working, then it doesn’t sit comfortably with me. (And don’t get me started on the pensions that those who strike are entitled to).

The trouble is people want it all. A modern efficient railway but with the touches of the past. It all costs and we pay for it. Most stations are more or less unmanned in the evenings (when that stuff is more likely to happen) anyway and would the person in the ticket office really make a blind bit of difference? Of course not. Ours is a lovely lady in her 50’s. Great to talk to about gardening but her presence doesn’t make me feel safe and stuck in her ticket office, with no visibility across the station she cannot call the ineffective police who don’t come/respond and I wouldn’t want her to put herself in harms way.

Perhaps a bit of commonsense matched with a bit of business acumen. Why not have a 7-11 (corner shop) on these stations with a very reduced rent in return the shopkeeper is also a quasi ticket collector / station manager. A lot of these railway shops have closed because the railway companies wanted too much rent. They should be encouraging people to set up businesses at the station with the added value that more people will be around so less likely to be trouble. Edited by Badger11 (07 Jul 2023 7.22am) Edited by Badger11 (07 Jul 2023 7.23am) It’s a great idea and would work - for a time. Greed would sadly take over, as it did before, and the railway companies (or network rail) would see the success and push the rent up - eventually forcing the business to close again. One of our issues is greed. As soon as something or someone becomes successful we think they can pay a little more and we squeeze and squeeze until they pop. This is where the small, local Tesco etc should be. The other issue is parking to encourage people not using the station to shop. Some t*** will also see that as a money making exercise.

Your're probably right but a railway system that is more or less nationalised should see beyond the pound note. Railway stations could become community hubs if people in the industry have the vision which I seriously doubt.
