I dont understand the dog whistle thing .. Your dog whistling? Mandatory water breaks in the cool UK? The rest of the world or some? Its not all. Evening kicks off. Sundown is prior to kick-off so these religious players can have water and gels (??) then, or at any time during the game without there being a drinks break for a religious reason. The problem there is? Physical? Rubbish the players can last for forty five minutes with out the game being stopped for them. If a player isn't fit enough without rule changes to fit around their own choice then they shouldn't be on the pitch.

With the break being around the 26th minute mark, I just couldn’t understand why they couldn’t just take on the food and fluids at half time. If you have been 14 hours or so without food then another 20 minutes wouldn’t make much difference. Not anti it the break, it just seems something that could wait. I would be more concerned about a professional athlete starving themselves and what effect it has on their stamina and performance.

Intentionally breaking the fast late without good reason during Ramadhan is considered a sin, however its clearly a matter for each individual as to what is considered a good reason - Personally I think its more to stay true to the ritual itself, so that the observance of Ramadhan by the individual is a more complete & satisfying experience - Originally posted by rob1969

Can you put this into a form that others can understand? Mandatory one minute water breaks were brought in by the Premier League in June 2020.

Thank you Mapletree for the explanation. I thought it could just wait until half time. Still could I guess, as it would be a reasonable compromise. I can’t imagine them stopping a 10,000 metre race half way through. Originally posted by Mapletree

so eating & drinking is forbidden ? what about replenishing one's levels of hydration intraveneously ? say, with a Saline solution in a water bag, on a little hospital tripod ?

Mandatory water breaks are not every game, or every level of football. They are based upon extreme temperatures, not religious choices. Fasting players could eat/drink before, or at half time, or go to the side of the pitch instead of stopping the game for a choice they made. The physiological aspect here? If they cant run for forty five minutes without these breaks , they are unfit to play, they have chosen to make themselves unfit to play. A fit human body stores enough carbs, glycogen to pay football for forty five minutes easily. So that leaves dehydration in forty five minutes of football un the UK cool climate necessitating a break of several minutes because they are dehydrated? Its a nonsense.
