For me it's about identity. I remember years ago Parish speaking about the clubs identity and talking of urban street football. Zaha epitomised this at he time and to a certain extent Eze does now. Building that identity takes time but it's DNA needs to do from the foundations upwards. It needs a leader, someone up for the project, with vision and the ability to see that vision through, whilst also keeping us in the Prem to fund it. That is no small ask! On one hand Palaces urban location feeds into this whilst on the other hand it is a massive block to being able to develop or even better build a new stadium. Look at all the clubs up ere in the north which are able to easily get support for developing new out of town areas or redeveloping old industrial land to build new stadium.

I know what you mean, but I'd just settle for a bit of magic. This season has been completely devoid of the sort of results that make you think: 'did we really do that?' e.g 0-2 at Citeh the last time. This season has been utterly without magic.

For us, wages are the problem with relegation. However, also think relegation would allow us to clear out all the pointless wages and allow us to have a pretty low wages but competitive, young side - with a couple of the players remaining on the existing type of contract. Balloon payments would cover that and we might be able to go straight back up but not be tied to the deadwood we have now. A clean start where we've hopefully taken on board the wage issue. I shudder to think about the hundreds of thousands wages we're just flushing down the drain on players who aren't good enough and have no sell on value. If we can’t clear those on pointless wages, because they are on a contract, what makes you think relegation would help clearing them out. I don’t follow your reasoning of being relegated means the deadwood would be cleared out, they aren’t going to go, because they won’t get a Premier wage elsewhere.

Having the ability to build and maintain a squad of Premier League quality players with adequate cover for all positions.

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!! |

Being able to purchase top class players without being priced out at the end of the transfer window. A decent match day experience - tired of watching pointless side to side kickabouts with few attempts on goal. Being able to press for a place in Europe instead of fighting relegation ... and getting the darn stand built to improve the ground facilities (for some anyway).

Given our turnover and our size (as I said in another thread, we are the 26th largest club by revenues in the world) I would say the level we should be at is around 50 points a season, always finishing somewhere around 10th place, and perhaps a Cup final/Europa League qualification once every 5-10 years. We should not be involved in relegation battles, and in a very good year when everything falls into place (maybe once in a decade) we might be on the fringes of the top 6. Our performance over the last decade may be the best in our history but that doesn't stop it being punching below our weight. With decent owners and sound management, the above is entirely possible. I am coming to the view (contrary to what I want on an emotional level) that Selhurst is a millstone around our neck. It's near impossible to redevelop properly, and a new main stand may amount to putting lipstick on a pig. Instead of wasting another five years lobbying various councils, we may do better to build a new stadium on a new site, move the club forward, and have done with it. I am very impressed with your knowledge and have to say your posts never come across in any way condescending. So much of what you say makes a lot of sense. I am interested to know how you know these facts though.

Instead of wasting another five years lobbying various councils, we may do better to build a new stadium on a new site, move the club forward, and have done with it. The only thing I would say as far as moving is concerned is that (we're told) that Parish has used up every alternative option when it comes to sites for a new stadium unless we start looking at land outside the M25. This would mean losing our status as a London club, our London post code and it could very well result in the loss of some current fans too. But I do agree that off the pitch as well as on it, if you do not move forward you do not stand still, you start to go backwards. With the stadium situation (even if we got this Main stand done) we will always face opposition as well as restrictions to being able to update the ground how we want it. The Arthur needs redoing as much as the Main stand. The White Horse is not too far behind and even the Holmesdale is not exactly state of the art!

The next level would be the ability to get the ball in the net (theirs not ours) a few times and win at least one in three games. The current level should not be difficult to improve upon!
Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled. |

Relegation doesn't have to be devastating, during the last 10 years we've been in the Prem teams like Newcastle, Aston Villa and Wolves (we replaced Wolves) have been relegated and subsequently promoted. It just depends how well you are prepared for it, look at Fulham now and look at how well Burnley/Sheffield United have responded to Relegation. Personally all hope has gone that we'll stay up this season. I want the board to have a solid plan for the aftermath of relegation and for us to fight back strongly next year. No, of course I would rather we didn't go down, just seems inevitable to me. Blimey, you're a glass half empty kind of a bloke aren't you! With 8 teams currently below us, 6 of which have a much worse GD, most of the teams we have left to play we have already beaten once this season yet according to you 'all hope is lost' Jeez

Relegation may not devastating for some as you say, but it is for many ... Charlton, Wigan, Stoke, Oldham, etc. If we go down, it may take years to get back (if ever) Look at Forest. A massive club. Title winners as well as two time European cup winners. Stuck in the FL for 20 years and even though they are finally back and have spent almost 200m they STILL could make an instant return to the FL. Relegation IS devasting, no doubt. If you go down you need luck to bounce back no matter who you are. Any Pro will tell you the Championship is the hardest of all divisions to get out of.
