Sorry, but that's rubbish. I was at the FA Youth Cup Semi-Final at Plough Lane in 1996, when we were beaten by a West Ham team that fielded teenagers Rio Ferdinand and Frank Lampard. There's nothing remotely new about top class youth football at the Palace. 1992 against Wimbledon at Plough Lane, followed by getting stuffed by Man Utd in the final.

Provided a good number of the 1st team members of the 'Team of the Eighties" Doris, Kenny, Swindly, Murphy, Nicholas, Hilaire, who am I forgetting? They all came from the youth team. We won the Youth Cup two years in a row back in the early seventies, as I recall. Over the years, our youth set-up has always been our primary source of talent. Clinton O'Morrison was in the youth side I mentioned earlier...Wilf, Richard Shaw, Southgate, far too many over the years to mention. Of our true greats, only Trevor Aylott and Tommy Langley didn't come through the youth side :-)

All outfield players plus substitute did.

I think Steeleys reference was that with Palace TV we can see pretty much all of these U18 - U21 games for a very reasonable cost - which is a relatively new offering - Originally posted by sydtheeagle

Also - just a mention, going back couple of years we had a guy in charge of the U23 ( as it was then) who complained rather vocally that the lads under his charge would be better served going out on loan than playing in an U23 side where very few would make the first team - he lost his job soon afterwards but with todays strategy where we are pushing more lads out into loan clubs it would appear that he had a point - Obviously not everyone is going to agree with everything said & often timing & the audience available at the time has a lot to do with things / the outcome, I don't know if he lost his job just because of what he said / where he said it but the timing of his leaving certainly indicated that it played a part.

I can’t recall this, however now with the category A academy, the Youth games are probably more competitive, just an opinion

You raise an interesting point. Parish is, by trade, a brand marketer and brand marketing very much depends on everyone being on-message, even when the message itself is crap. There's some evidence that he runs Palace the same way; whether you're right or wrong in your opinion, you're not allowed to go off-brand. This may go some way to explaining Derry's departure as well.

Just had a second to look back - it was Richard Shaw that complained & then left shortly afterwards. Originally posted by Spiderman
