I like the idea of Jairo Riederwald being given an extended run of 3 - 5 games. Only then will we know for sure whether he has what it takes to make it at this level. Up until now, we've seen flashes of ability and composure...but then he's left out again.

Obviously PV isn't impressed in training. But from a selfish fan point of view, I'd love to get a good look at him over five or so games...so I know whether to emotionally give up on him.

More likely it'll be Luka though. I'm not opposed to this - I think he's been scapegoated an awful lot and isn't as bad as some suggest. (Nor do I think he's the answer either, by the way.)

I quite like what I saw of Hughes. Wouldn't mind it.

Macca is one of my all time favourite players. Guess it depends whether he's still got it in the tank.

Jairo is definitely someone you can root for. Seems like a lovely bloke and is highly spoken of. The issue is he has never looked like a brave player and he is slow and seems to have bulked up a lot. Technically he looks good, but I think to be as slow as he is you need a footballing brain like Jorghino and I'm not convinced he's got that. I would love to see him given the opportunity, but I'm not convinced it would work.

Luka makes at least one glaring error even in cameos and made another on Saturday. With time and space he can still hit a good pass and he's willing to put a foot in, but he is way off the pace of the PL. Maybe if he got a run of 5 or 6 games he might get sharper, but like Jairo I'm not convinced.

Hughes seems the most likely as he works well in tight spaces, is a bit of a terrier and has good technique. Seems to have faded into the background though. If he's chomping at the bit for a chance I'd give it to him.

No doubt in my mind that we need to play another central midfielder alongside Dacoure. Luka would be my choice but there is also Macca who I would prefer if/when fit. Then we have Hughes or Reidewald. Schlup in my opinion shouldn’t be in the frame unless playing wide midfield. Saying all that, I expect PV will play one central midfielder with the others “lost in space” 🚀 somewhere :-(

In that case why not sign Will Robinson

Enjoying getting up later and not having someone who knows better than me (apart from the missus of course).

Out of the choices we have at present I'd prefer Hughes.

Schlupp appears lost on the few occasions that he's filled in gets pulled out of position up the pitch too much, leaving Decoure exposed.

I'm afraid Luka is a couple of seasons past his best, a great servant but time to go.

Macca, if fit and younger would be ideal but...

We need someone bought in or a youngster moulded into the position.

It would seem for whatever reason Vieira does not trust Luka, Hughes or Jairo to perform in midfield other than in cameo roles.
I’m wondering if a short term solution could be to use Guehi in front of the back four with Tomkins partnering Anderson in defence.
When fit, Tomkins is a solid and reliable defender who competes physically, is strong in the air and very rarely lets us down.
Guehi is mobile, athletic , a good tackler and passer and has a decent turn of pace to bring the ball forward. He could take some of the defensive pressure off Doucoure.
The downside would be of course breaking up the sound defensive partnership of Anderson / Guehi, but it would only be a temporary measure until we have midfield options that Vieira trusts.
Others have suggested using Anderson in midfield because of his passing range, but I don’t think he has the mobility and he wouldn’t have the space to pick his passes if moved further forward.

Not to shoot down this suggestion, I think there is logic behind what you are saying, but I was always under the impression that Andersen and Guehi were brought in to form that CB partnership in being good in possession, on the ball, passing forward etc.

From my perspective, I think the regular introduction of the likes of Tomkins at the back will disrupt the tactical approach of the manager and therefore will only be seen as a temporary or emergency solution. I'd be shocked to see PV revert to a more 'traditional' set up away from what appears to be his managerial style.

Either way, the need for somebody to anchor the midfield seems to be a stark and ubiquitously acknowledged one so hopefully the club/manager recognise this too. Personally, I think we'll see a continual rotation of one player who doesn't quite fit the bill after another.

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!

He doesn't want 2 DMs he wants Gallagher or someone similar, i think it would be better if he wants only one DM to use Doucoure as a No 8, and buy some one built like a brick s***house as DM

Will Hughes for me.

He's one of those players without any outstanding qualities. But is quite metronomic in possession. Little 5yrd passes that keep things moving. Energetic and can put a foot in.

Luka is a liability, as well as having lost pace, he seams to have lost the speed of thought too. The first goal on Sat was an example of that

I think your aspirations, should be beyond Hughes, he isn’t very good and doesn’t appear fit enough. For someone of 6’ 3’’ doesn’t impose himself on any game.

Schlupp should partner Doucoure, if 4-2-3-1 (which is a better bet than 4-3-3).

Then Olise-Eze-Zaha

Then Edouard.
