That's fair do's, ME but there must be a way that we can compel mega companies to cough up more for the profits they make, surely. Why the rule about headquarters anyway. Why not just on profits made? Agreed. Companies like Amazon sell goods in the UK but post their profits in a lower tax country. My simplistic view is this, if you are selling goods and services in the UK you should post your revenues and therefore pay tax on them in the UK. Perhaps a sales tax is more appropriate for some businesses.

Yes. It seems to me that some economic decisions are more 'difficult' for some than others.

A load of international companies base their headquarters here - particularly US tech companies - to avoid tax. After the Apple saga, the EU has ruled these companies have to pay their tax. After the ruling, Ireland was forced to put the tax these companies hadn't paid into an account pending the final arbitrations. Ireland has used some of it (they're calling it a windfall) to ease the cost of living crisis. However, conversely, and rather obviously, the companies are starting to leave. It's not an easy situation to balance.

As long as companies are allowed to do business in one country and post their revenues in another they will get away with it. The UK is the 6th largest economy so if we told Amazon stop dodging your taxes or close up I suspect they will obey they cannot afford to lose such a big market. Some of the smaller countries in the EU they could walk away from.

It quite amused me near the end of his talk this morning, that he used the phrase "going for Broke" I thought we'd passed that point ages ago

So Hunt has now cancelled or rowed back most of the tax cuts and energy benefits that so many people thought was dreadful. Cue "complaints about the cost of living crisis".

If Hunt can at least put some brakes on this car crash, it would make Hunt the prime mover for PM. We have the full details of his U-turn to hear yet, and we'll have to wait some months to see any difference in numbers. If he can steady the ship a bit, then it puts the Tories in a much better position for a Summer GE.

So where were we before Truss, not in a good place at all. Reversing-out will stem the panic I think Its more or less dictated to Hunt what's required. The brexit idea that we can be sovereign i.e. decide just what we want to do, is really dead in the water.

This crisis has done lasting damage to mortgage payers and housing hopefuls. And all for nothing. It is by no means reversible.
