I don’t mean this to be negative towards your post, but Semenyo isn’t a target man. He is a player more like Wilf than Mateta. People are looking at his stats from the season before last, and missing the point entirely. Gibbs White did nothing while on loan at Swansea, but is now, after a single season of good form, being rated by wolves at 35m…which is ludicrous IMO. My point here being, this lads potential is being judged on his form from last season which was very good indeed. 20 goal contributions for a 21/22 year old is worth taking a look at, all while playing for a club that struggled, finished 17th and he contributed to a third of all the goals the entire squad scored last season. It is beyond me why I post out of such ignorance sometimes Hudson (more so than usual), I'm sure I'm not the only one, and found this on YouTube following your comment: He does seem 'Wilf-esque' including even some of his celebrations! I'm now pro-Semenyo despite always well aware that such videos are only a short montage of very best moments and do not provide a fuller picture. I think my sentiment was heavily influenced by an apparent consensus that we need a 'starting goalscorer'. He seems or looks to play wider than I imagined. Perhaps worth the gamble in that case however still desperately desire a 'goal-scoring' forward.
Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!! |

But this guy, for a third of the price…seems promising. I do think he’s more of a wide forward than a central striker. I think it would be great to have a player like this in the bench, over someone like Ayew, who I feel is more of a solid option, rather than a game changer.

Totaly agree that the money asked for MGW is ludicrous. I don't think he's all that either. Better than Schlupp but so are other players available for £20m less than MGW. The problem that I have with Semenyo is that he plays as a centre forward so for him to get in our team, he has to be compared with Mateta & Edouard, otherwise we're signing him to play him out of position in a tougher league. Happy to take his stats from last season - he played every single game as a striker and got 8 goals in 2100 minutes, so one goal every 3 games (265 mins). For comparison, the season before coming to us, JP Mateta got one goal every 143 minutes in the Bundesliga; Edouard got one goal every 125 mins in the SPL. In terms of goalscoring, he's way behind what we've currently got. In terms of playing wide, Olise got a goal contribution every 171 minutes at the age of 18/19. Eze got one every 184 minutes at the age of 20/21. Semenyo got one every 106 minutes at the age of 21/22. It's better than their record, but again, it's as a striker whereas the others played deeper. The visual test on the contributions has a lot on the counter-attack and they're not goals you really see in the Premier League - the defending is better. [Link] For comparison, watch this of Olise at a much younger age [Link] He's creating space in tight areas, defending beyond what Semenyo will do (and Olise still isn't good enough defensively for the Prem), and his passes are incisive and between the lines. Just visually, Olise is miles better. He plays up front, but gets nowhere near enough goals to play upfront for us. If we sign him, it's to play him out of position and I don't see that he's better than Olise/Ayew on the right or Zaha/Edouard on the left. His assists are with loads of space against few defenders and we don't get that. So for £12m.... what's the point?

I had square-pegged Semenyo in the round hole however would like a player in the mould you have mentioned. Anyone akin to the likes or Watkins, Ings, C.Wilson, Iheanacho, I'm sure there's plenty more. We haven't had a player like that since Bats really. Also, apropos Ayew, love him to pieces but I'd put him behind Ebiowei for the foreseeable future as things stand now.

If he is a player like Wilf lets say stay clear of him we dont want another like that losing the ball 90% of the time always wanting the glory and assist record not so good either. He may well become a good player but you need to develop and play we wont be able to do that and it doesn't solve what the real issues are which is creating chances and proper service into the box (fix this the likes of Mateta even Benteke over past seasons would have scored far more goals) At one stage Palace was one of the top teams for set plays attacking plus defending now we are awful at both.

Even Chelsea are struggling to find a striker, so we have little chance of finding one in our budget, that will hit the ground running. Its going to be someone seen as having potential, thats where we are financially.
