Just got home from having a Friday night drop in Croydon. Not one to assess the costs of a pint but when waiting for Mrs GM to arrive, I bought a pint of Beavertown Neck Oil for one in The Dog & Bull (great boozer btw) for a whopping £7.10. Lord Jesus.

That did read as quite dystopian and provoke a visceral and existential wobble for me.
Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!! |

My dear wife and I have returned from a visit to a renovated Public House about 50 yards from the beach. We enjoyed a splendid evening in the garden. Excellent service and very respectful clientele.

Shocking and unfortunately it's going to get worse.

I read somewhere fairly recently that pubs in the UK were closing at the rate of about 400 per year - hardly surprising really, cost increases, the difference between the price of a pint in the Pub compared to Supermarket beer - I would imagine that big city boozers where the late teens + 20 / 30 somethings can go to get ratted & meet girls, maybe as a stepping stone on the way to the nightclub or those pubs that have a particularly good food offering will probably be the most likely to survive longest but if your an average pub in an average location survival probably depends upon the owners deep pockets or the brewery's patience levels. Pubs will Fade out. Pints will drop off and people will drink less. That’s my prediction. I’ve pretty much given up now. Too expensive. Used to love the pub but they are very different places now. Nearly all smart cafes. Changing world.

Going back to bygone days, it was not unusual for a customer to offer the bartender a drink which was usually accepted and the person used to pour a half pint, raise it in appreciation and place it at the back of the bar area. I still offer barstaff a drink, on occassions.

Back in the day if I was in a pub early doors & it was shaping up to be a busy night I would usually buy the bartender a drink so that he / she remembered me & gave me priority service when people were queuing several deep at the bar.

I am partial to a pint but do not tend to drink at home unless we have people round. These days I prefer the local micro pubs over the big boozers as they serve local ales kept well and you can have a chat. I have a love/hate with Spoons as they keep lovely old buildings open but their business model is not great for small brewers and they attract some right 'characterd.' But as a real ale enthusiast you can beat a well kept pint over a can any day. And don't get me started on price. Was at Euston Station the other day and they wanted over £8 for an average beer in a bar in the station so went outside and paid far less for a far better pint.

A perfect demonstration of economic theory and practice. 'supply and demand'... 'product differentiation' ...
