I've no interest in watching a programme about children chasing an impossible dream that almost inevitably will be shattered, so was just intrigued to know why the parent of one if the kids was identified in the documentary as "single". If it was part of a wider context within the documentary, such as: "it's difficult enough for 2 parents then look how difficult it is for 1", then that would have answered my question, rather than my intelligence being questioned.
Palace since 19 August 1972. Palace 1 (Tony Taylor) Liverpool 1 (Emlyn Hughes) |

'How on earth do some of these parents do it? 3 practice session and a match. One of the single mums had another boy at Chelsea.' Pretty sure you could have deuced that 6 training sessions and 2 matches a week at different clubs would be difficult for a single parent, but if not you know now the intention

The bit that made me sad was when the 11/12 year olds started talking about money.

The bit I liked was Wilf emphasising the importance of discipline! Like other posters, I thought Phil H came across very well. He had terrific rapport both with the lads and with their parents. However, I was left wondering if the intensity was good for growing bodies - one boy had already sustained a long term injury. And at such a young age, should they really be in such a competitive hothouse? in effect, they are sacrificing their childhood - a bit like the gymnasts in China and Russia. Probably better to be released early than when they reach their 20s to give them the chance to be normal. In days gone by, academies didn’t exist. The stars of the future seemed to spend all their spare time kicking a tennis ball against a brick wall to hone their skills. Did Ian Wright go through an academy? Or Vardy?

Watched it! Made me feel proud of the academy and Palace. I did some scouting for West Ham (U10s) a few years ago. It is such a roller coaster for the families and boys. The criteria for what the coaches / clubs are looking for can change annually. In many cases the parents are or seem to be living out their dreams and have the wrong motivations for their sons to be successful! I’m looking forward to next weeks episode still!

They continue at school as normal all the way through their secondary education. It's only post 16 when they commit to daily training. Originally posted by Palace Old Geezer
Yep, that's true about the contract, wasn't clear. Another point made by the TV critic in the Mail was 'What's happened to their school work?'. If they don't progress in the Academy the kids need some decent education to fall back on. Assume that's a given.

Felt for the young lad who was short, being short myself, I can relate. In the 60s I played for district schools team, the coach said he thought I was County standard but could not recommend me as I too short. I was devastated. Hope he has a growth spurt.

There was a stat a while ago, might have changed now, that a large percentage of pro footballers had a birthday from September to December simply because in their age groups they had six months growth on others.
