Luka, Schlupp and Hughes are not adequate longer term replacements for McArthur in my view.
Luka and Hughes don't play with McArthur's intensity or energy and while Schlupp has good athleticism he doesn't have McArthur's nous or all round game.
He has very good moments and can do a job in midfield, but can look like a square peg in a round hole.
This is not a criticism of Schlupp.
He was never used in central midfield until he joined us.
It's not going to be an easy task to replace McArthur.
I like Tielemans who has similar all round attributes to McArthur although I recognise such a move would be a non starter.

Not quite, still got 2 months to go, still, if you have to resort to time insults, you've(imo) lost your argument. Sad really.

This operation, will make the 'Charge Of The Light Brigade' seem like a simple military exercise.

You've posted some terrible rubbish on here in your time, Lanzon. But this takes the cake. Diabolical viewpoint and post. McArthur's an absolute legend and still puts in more of a shift at 30 something than most 20 year olds.

"still..."?
That was the case until his injury last November. Since then his injury record has become worrisome and it was always going to be a gamble to offer him the extra year. It doesn't look as if it's a gamble that will pay off. He looked well off the pace when he did play some minutes in pre-season before getting injured again.

I don't expect him to feature much during this season as I think he'll struggle to get up to match fitness again.

Yes, he's been a great servant for Palace and I shall miss his
battling qualities in midfield. I hope he does well in whatever role/career he takes on after he leaves us.

Finally, whilst I wouldn't go so far as Lanzo in his response to the poster, I would agree with him that it wasn't a case of McArthur 'deserving' an extension.

Yes, 'still' meant generally as a player in his 30s running rings around players in their 20s. Which has been the case over the last few seasons.

If the club had given him a three-year contract, I'd raise an eyebrow. But for me, he's still well worth a year extension. And aside from his capabilities on the field, he's by all accounts a big character off the field. Spent time as captain last season. Players like that, who set high standards, are worth having around. One year extension was the right call, for me.

i'd agree. A fit Macca still gets into the 1st X1 so his extension was justified. He just needs to stay fit - maybe he was rushed back a little early as the same injury has flared up??

Coaching WITH us I hope. A natural leader.

When asked about McArthur, Vieira said they should know the extent of the injury today but hoped it wouldn't be too serious.
Does anyone know whether he's having a recurrence of the same injury or whether it's a series of smaller injuries?
If it's the same injury it strikes me that he's not fully recovering and aggravating the injury each time he returns and it could be another stop/start season for him.

McArthur is a big talker on the pitch and leads by example as well. Until his injury last season he was one of our best players. Since then he's struggled to get a run of games. I definitely think a new deal was the right move even ignoring sentimental reasons as he exemplifies what a footballer should be and that is important in an increasingly youthful squad, a bit like Noble was in the last few seasons at Spam.

What on earth has upset you? What insults, what argument? My mock-question was made in jest, and the poster to whom it was addressed, NEILLO, made it clear by his response that he took it in that cheerful spirit. If my post saddened you, I'm sorry.
