I hope the taxman wins. If you are a self employed contractor you have to demonstrate that to the taxman so a plumber for example can say that in a year he worked for dozens of people in a variety of places. Gary Lineker has worked for the BBC for years doing the same job probably 9 months of the year. His boss is the BBC so he is a de facto employee and should be treated as such. The BBC may employ Gary Lineker productions as opposed to the artist but as the lawyer pointed out if Lineker is unavailable they do not provide an alternate person where if you employ a plumbing firm they will send who ever is available. There are aspects of his career which could be called self employed e.g. one off TV ads, paid appearances, public speaking etc. However his main job at the BBC is clearly that of an employee, if he wins the taxman needs to change the law. This is not a Lineker rant far too many people in showbiz are doing the same. It's one thing to be an occasional presenter e.g. filling in for Gary but the hours he works should be PAYE.

No football fans like him at all - so I guess he's the perfect choice for MOTD.

One of the companies I worked for had an engineer that they used for pretty much all of their international work, this went on for about 20 years, this guy was self employed so he was a subcontractor, at a certain point in time all this became a problem with HMRC because we were the only company that he actually did any work for / invoiced accordingly - I think eventually we found him some work for some of our end users so that he could invoice them & demonstrate that he had a customer base of more than one. Does anybody remember who chaired Match Of the Day before Lineker ? seems to be a heck of a tenured position ? he seems more unsackable than a Pope.

Remember Des on the front of the Sun praying before we played someone at the World Cup in ‘98? I think it was a Friday night. Wasn’t there a prayer mat or something? Brighton tw@t.

I noticed that GL picked up an humanitarian award from Amnesty International for his courageous stand on refugees. But what exactly did he do? Send a couple of tweets and offered a refugee a room for a few weeks in his mansion. I would have been embarrassed to have accepted it. Still in the same week Meghan picked up a feminist award for her hard work marrying somebody rich and famous and leaching off him. Growing up I remember these awards were for people who worked tirelessly and often in appalling conditions to help those in need. Sadly today it seems all you have to do is fire off a few tweets mission accomplished. So where's my award then.
