I was quite disappointed with Eze last night, and I didn't want to be. I thought he was a fantastic player before he got injured, but he looks like something's not right, and I'm not sure it's lack of fitness. He looks like he's holding back, perhaps afraid of getting injured again. I really hope he gets back to what he was.

As for Olise, he will be a top, top player in the future, but it may not be with us. I can see him playing at the very top level.

First prem start of the season though, lets be patient with the guy.

Good Post, its about personal application. you cant give someone what Eze, Wilf and Olise have but you can give them what Ayew, McArthur and Gallagher have.

Long been an opinion of mine.

For example, this always goes down very badly, but I've had many an argument with Liverpool 'fans' (I've endeavoured to not be within even proximity of the city let alone there itself throughout my life, hence 'fans') but also others, mostly regarding the national team, when I have asked them to describe Jordan Henderson as a footballer, or how they would to future generations? Half decent on the ball, can pass solidly, 6ft of slightly over, not weak, can hit a ball though doesn't score many, not really a set piece taker, half decent defensively, 'does what he is told' etc etc. I have somewhat tongue in cheek often said you could produce a million of him, often calling him a 'conveyer belt' or 'factory stock' footballer.

For me, I do prefer the 'flair' or 'creative' players, the ones who see and do things others cannot however I do appreciate there is still a necessity for industry, physical attributes etc etc. Eze has flair and ability in abundance however on the proverbial 'wet Tuesday night at {insert crap northern team}' the more nitty gritty is often required. He's not particularly strong or quick and can look a bit lost when not in possession.

The physical attributes can be worked upon, how hard can it be to get a professional sportsperson into better shape? It is staggering however how often this does not happen, for whatever reason. Also, better positional sense etc can be taught, but commitment and desire cannot.

Agree with regards to Eze, he did look to still be adjusting Monday but he is only just back from injury. The question isn't over his ability, it's whether he can get back to speed, which I believe he will, but then also whether he can improve upon what he has shown already, which I am more hesitant about but would not rule out.

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!

I see the point that you are trying to make and agree that teaching natural ability/technique is almost impossible.
But teaching someone to be aggressive, combative and chase lost balls for 90 minutes is just as hard. Some people have it and some don’t. Denis Wise would probably never have been a professional footballer with out his aggression and will to win, Suarez would be half the player. If le tissier had Stuart Pearce attitude and physicality he would have been the best player in the world.
Schlupp is as quick, fit, good at shooting etc as Gallagher , one is worth 5 times more than the other.
Most wingers /flair players, by definition, aren’t workman like. When you get the 2 together you get a true world class player like salah or robben.
Hard work beats ability, when ability don’t work hard.

Very true.
Guys like Bernardo Silva and Phil Foden are slightly built, but consistently play at 100% commitment to go along with their obvious natural ability. This differentiates them from players of similar talent without the work ethic and this is why Guardiola selects them for City.
It's too early to make an assessment of where Olise and Eze stand in this regard.

100% agree. If it was easy to teach that natural work rate and tenacity than every player would have it. But its not. Its why Gallagher stands out.

You can push players to run more, drill them to close down more, but there is a little subconscious thing that some players have that doesn't ever let them give up - chasing a lost cause, not pulling out of a tackle etc.

Above all of it. Players are all different and bring different attributes to the game. Your Maccas of the world give the more creative players a platform to play from.

Eze has barely played in a year so how people are expecting him to be 100% and running the show is beyond mad. Leeds was his first league start of the season.

We should be very happy that with Eze and Olise we have 2 of the most exciting talents in the league.

Unfortunately Eze is beginning to remind me of Puncheon who never really regained his form when Cabaye was signed. Little confidence going forward with the ball and always turning his back on players up front and wanting to play the ball backwards. I remember only one time when he beat a player going forward on Monday. He should have been replaced by Schlupp a lot earlier. I'd like to see a midfield of McArthur, Gallagher and Hughes with Eze getting a run later in the game if required.

I wouldn't, i would like to see Eze, McArthur and Hughes against Southampton

You don't take your garden waste to the local tip in a Lambo do you?

These three are Rolls Royce players, others are there to do the defensive heavy lifting.

However, I agree that it's a bit tricky accommodating all three in the same 11 other than exceptionally....

Perhaps I’m a natural worrier but I do have a concern if Zaha, Eze and Olise can be accommodated in the same team other than for brief periods where e.g substitutions are made.
The reason is that if you add a striker to those 3 that means 4 players who are not good at winning the ball back or adept at tracking back.
The modern game does not seem to permit that luxury and I suspect that our game would lack the requisite intensity with four players who don’t really contribute defensively.
The pragmatist in me thinks we’ll only see the three players feature in the same team on occasions.

This is why PV hauled Olise off against Newcastle. He was not following instructions and paid the price. I imagine these players will have been told they must do the graft if they want to play.

Not this season. Gallagher is our attacking centre mid and has proven to be one of the league's best in this position. If Gallagher was ours permanently, he owns that spot. Eze doesn't get a look in for me. Putting CG in a defensive mid position nullifies his impact, as we've seen. But given we'll probably lose him next season, Eze has the chance to make that spot his own. I do worry he's a luxury...probably needs to up his work rate and pressing game to suit PV style...but he's a talented kid for sure.

You just said Gallagher is one of the best attacking mids in the prem haha. Eze obvs gets a look in. That was his second start in the prem this season and showed some really good sparks against Leeds and some sloppy moments. Next season after 10 games you won’t be saying the same thing. Gallagher is obvs class but he’s very much a system player.

Eze tore his Achilles one of the worst injuries a player can get. His form hasn’t just dropped from a player Coming in. How is this anything compared to puncheon :/
