It is no ow pretty clear we have a policy of a one year at a time for me players over 30 (and offering let Ng contracts to those in the early years at the top level.) I get that and broadly agree but older players usually on bigger money will always seek the security of a longer deal.

If this means we don't see older players being paid a huge wedge to not play so be it
Look at Sakho in his last season huge wages and not even warming the bench.

I thing he is one of the unsung hero's in our current squad. Defensively he reads the game very well and is one of our main players who helps win the ball back. He is also important in defending set pieces. On downside he does not offer a goal threat and rarely supplies a cutting edge pass. I don't think he will be easy to replace. Hughes is a better ball player but he is not as tenacious or strong in getting the ball back and there can't be many players Hughes will beat in an aerial duel.

We are too small at the back as well, (Everton second half).

Presumably there is an upper limit to what we are willing to pay him, and it differs to what his agent thinks he can secure for him?

Policy is now to offer only one year extensions to those over 30 years old. Cheickou wants 2 years, we only offered 1 is my understanding.

Wouldn’t be surprised if we offered 1 year plus an extension if certain amount of games are played

We are not too small at the back, we dont have a commanding keeper who shouts at the back four

It will be interesting at the end of the coming season when we try and offer Wilf just a one year extension on the grounds that he's too old

Certainly an interesting observation - I guess we will try & get him into a new contract whilst he is still 29 to try to head that problem off.

Yeah as you say good luck to him. I was never a massive fan but he served us well. Couldn't pass or play football for s*** I always thought but most of the time did the job he was there to do. I wish him well

Don't waste your time with jealousy. Sometimes your ahead, sometimes your behind, the race is long. But in the end it's only with yourself!!

Never rated him, always expected a bit more but it never came. A plodder in a plodding midfield, as was so timely illustrated by the arrival of Conor Gallagher. I worked with quite a few Wet Spam fans at the time we signed him, they weren't sorry to see him go.
For a player of such limited ability the game has treated him well.
Arguably did well enough for us at the time of Hodgson's management and what was expected of him but now things are different - he can't carry the ball and he can't pass, two essentials in a technical game.
