Even if Chelsea want to sell him (which I very much doubt) he will likely go to a club that can afford far more money than we can. That's how football works, I'm afraid. Money. In fact a Coventry fan said to me on Tuesday: Your team were great last night.

I love the optimism, and there's some sound reasoning. But after the year he's had, I just cannot see him walking out of Chelsea having never played for them. If he doesn't give it a year to break into their side, he'll regret never having tried for the rest of his career. The only really convincing argument I could see is if Chelsea are continually unable to upgrade his contract, as rightly pointed out, a young England International should be on 4 times the reported £17k

For me, Eze is without doubt a classy player but he needs to find his position. Does he have the work rate and defensive nous to command a position in this team? Can he add more goals and assist to his game?

This is a good read BUT there's a ton of speculation (not fact) here. Some points. Would anyone not do that in twenty seconds flat? Two reasons: 1. Adaramola, Tayo. 2. Mitchell is a brilliant player. Connor is an impact player. Far harder to find the second than the first. It is a spectulative post not a factual one obviously

In his one season in the Prem he got 6 assists - Wilf has only bettered that once in his career at PL level despite being at his prime when in the PL. There may be doubts over Eze's defensive capabilities but foolish to doubt his creativity. A side note here is that Wilf and Ayew consistently top the table for all players in the PL who are dispossessed and neither has any sort of record of providing assists, That has been consistent this season too. Running up blind alleys and lack of a final ball is a running theme. Olise has matched their output in the last 2 seasons in less than half of one season.

Edited by doi209 (06 Apr 2022 3.27pm) its not “no contest” its a tough contest…however if we had to have a sacrificial lamb to get conner full time i would have to take that deal knowing we have olise & eddy who can also play wide. a more ideal situation would be for us to purchase conner next season and use all our budget on him…i genuinely think our squad could easily sustain that strategy.

[afford] That is not true, unless Harris and Blitzer's Chelsea bid goes through. We can very easily afford Connor. We have billionaire owners who are right up there with everyone but possibly Man City and Newcastle when it comes to wealth. Whether they would dip into their pockets and pay for Gallagher may be doubtful, but that's another question entirely. Edited by sydtheeagle (06 Apr 2022 7.26pm)

The only hope we have is that because Chelsea do not NEED him , after all they have won loads without him being anywhere near the place , they may take the value out of the player that he has created performing at Palace. The fact that he loves Chelsea means nothing to Chelsea or their owners or manager. Their only concern is creating wealth and success and if they see Gallagher creating success on the field they will take him back but if they see him as a means of enhancing their wealth they sell him. My take is that Chelsea has two questions to answer. First, do they want Connor for the long run, and second do they want him immediately? My guess is that the answer to the first question is, right now, "yes" and the answer to the second one is less clear. If he's in their first team plans for next season then the answer will be "yes", bring him back now". If, on the other hand, he's seen as a fringe player for next season who's still a year away from being a full-time first-teamer, then the answer will be "not sure", in which case they might conclude that his development into a first team player is better served by another productive loan. And there's nowhere better to do that than Palace. I'm sure Connor himself would agree. Further, I would guess they probably haven't totally decided where he would fit in next season yet, and they probably won't until June/July. Taking all of the above into account, I'd say the chances he'll stay at Chelsea next season are probably roughly 50% right now. The chances that he'll come to us for another year's loan are probably around 20%. And the chances that Chelsea will sell him outright are less than 15%. If they do simply sell him, I'd say we have at least a shot at getting him although I'd imagine Spurs, Arsenal, and Man Utd would all be in with a bid. West Ham and Newcastle doubtless would too, but I'm not worried about them.
