I don't have to agree with his politics to think that essentially bombarding or hacking the site in some way to take it down for good is really quite terrible and worrying situation to fob off as nothing or deserved. I'm all for criticising the morally dereft, especially when they're often spoon fed and propped up by the same compassion and society that they otherwise despise, but it's better to hear those voices and have open venues for them than to give destructive actions like this a free pass. Edited by BlueJay (24 May 2022 9.47am) I agree with your point about the hacking. That was rather sinister. I don't know who was responsible, but Elgin suspected a member of the BBS. That wouldn't surprise me, given what nasty scum some of them are. In the end, Elgin was disloyal to those who backed him and chose to side with his political like minds, one of whom tried to shut down his site after being initially banned. There were very few regular contributors, so that might explain the lack of outrage at the site's demise. Edited by Hrolf The Ganger (25 May 2022 3.18pm)

Edited by Hrolf The Ganger (25 May 2022 3.18pm) I think I'm viewing it more in terms of if people took down Comrades and feel that it's a success, it sets a dangerous precedent. These people likely cover their tracks, but maybe either getting peoples backs up, or those he appears to point the finger at are to blame. It's a shame we may not ever know more but in any case I expect that HOL would be much better prepared should some loser decide to try the same here!

I think it may have been someone or a group connected to Ukraine rather than a BBS member. Elgin had put 'Ukrainians not welcome' on the front page and that was when the attacks started. That included people signing up to post pro Ukrainian messages. Only reading and listening to pro Russian statements and TV IMO is not having a complete range of views. It's well known that Russian state media is government controlled. Simply saying that pro-western media is biased and full of fake news doesn't cut it at all. In fact you are more likely to see fake news with that blinkered and restricted media coverage. But each to his own.

I didn't realise that. I still with the view that someone hacking or taking it down wasn't right, but in light of your comments certainly it's hard to feel all that sorry for someone who appears to have tried to silence others voices in such a way.

Elgin had no technical understanding of websites, so he was easy prey. Comrades started out which good principles which I supported. Unfortunately, Elgin never really trusted people diametrically opposed to his politics and also enraged people on the left and right with his rabid pro Russian stance. You could say he was another victim of the Ukraine war. He would be welcome on here I'm sure as long as he was prepared to defend his anti Western views politely and rationally. Trouble is that he was not particularly subtle. He was eventually banned from the BBS after a number of warnings for saying something along the lines of being happy to see Boris Johnson assassinated. I wouldn't be too keen to defend him Bluejay.

I wouldn't be too keen to defend him Bluejay. Wow, sounds like something of a livewire. Discussions can of course get heated, sometimes to unfortunate levels, but it sounds like the man knew no limits.
