Not exactly a goal fest is it. Very few games with more than one goal. Better defences? Or lack of good strikers? Anyone been watching? Seen snippets. Possibly typical group stage games when you don’t want to lose. Although may not come across on tv, the playing surfaces are poor. The IC one yesterday was like a ploughed field

This post has been merged from a topic called 'African Cup of Nations' by becky Fun and games yesterday Ivory Coast v. Sierre Leone. Zaha won a penalty for Ivory Coast which was saved. On 88 minutes IC defender headed a backpass, keeper gathered then slipped and lost it, attacker gathered and passed to colleague who promptly slipped himself, staggered up and just managed to scramble it in. Keeper carried off, presumably in shame Result a 2-2 draw. Pitches look poor, players seemed fast and fit but not a great exhibition so far.

This post has been merged from a topic called 'African Cup of Nations' by becky I tried to watch Zaha's match yesterday, but gave up. As others have said, the pitches are awful and the quality of football is not much better than Sunday League in the park (IMHO!). This competition leaves me cold I'm afraid.
Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled. |

It's not a surprise considering the extreme weather than many African nations have to endure so unless someone is prepared to spend money on stadiums and pitches...

Seems the bbc are showing(online/iplayer) the match between Ivory Coast v Algeria KO 16.00 on Thursday(20th). IC only need a draw/win to progress, Algeria need to win. Might be, i said might be a good game. See if Wilf can weave his magic. Edited by eagleman13 (17 Jan 2022 11.56am)

Cheikhou Kouyate won’t be back this week as Senegal have won their group. But what amazes me is they’ve only scored one goal.

At least Cheik will get a bit of rest coz he misses the next game due to his 2nd booking. Agreed about the lack of goals tho. YT . . . You didnt think I'd blatantly root for the holders Algeria did you?
