Mateta does seem to have come on a bit under PV's tutelage. Still need to see more of him before deciding. Also, if we manage his appearances so that we don't trigger the 15 starts but can get to see enough of him to form a considered judgment then we might be able to get him for a lower price if we decide he's worth having. Of course, if he starts pulling up the proverbial trees then we make sure he has 15 starts and we buy him at the end of the loan before someone else comes in for him.

“could easily have scored last night if any of his shots hadn't been directly at Fabianski.” Beautifully put!

From the official Palace website when he signed: Crystal Palace have signed Jean-Philippe Mateta on an 18-month loan deal, subject to international clearance, with an option to make the move permanent. Very clearly says it’s an option which the club have subsequently confirmed several times. There is no obligation to buy him….he can play as often as we wish can score as many goals as he likes can eat as many curries as he wants …we don’t have to buy him.

“That’s a joke son, I say, that’s a joke.” “Nice boy, but he’s sharp as a throw pillow.” “He’s so dumb he thinks a Mexican border pays rent” “ “Son… I say, son, some people are so narrow minded they can look through a keyhole with both eyes.”__ Forhorn Leghorn |

Widely reported as an option to buy that becomes an obligation after making 15 starts. This fits in with the above statement on the club website.

He deserves a chance to show if he's up to the required standard or not. We have a terrible habit of writing these guys off when they only play 10 minutes here or 20 minutes there but it's incredibly difficult to make an impact under those circumstances. He's played 480 minutes for us, which equates to 5 games, and he's scored twice. That's not horrific at all. I think he's been impressive the last couple of games. Give him a run and see what he can do and if he's rubbish then fine, send him back.
We were somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the drugs began to take hold... |

I would offer £6m as a good back up player. They don’t want him back
He has a 2 season loan deal with triggers One of them is 15 games = price of 16m only way around this is if he doesn't hit that mark or the agreement can be terminated which I expect other terms regarding that are in place as well (I believe we would of sent him back in the summer I expect a big fee would be involved which is why we didn't) If we want to keep him and not pay this fee we will need to not use him and wait until his contract with parent club expires (2023 his deal with Mainz expires) Edited by grumpymort (02 Jan 2022 3.59pm)

So you call them up say you will offer six mil now and tear up the old agreements. Done deal.
