Even though I made a "witty" reply further up the thread, I realise that rather than absolute "bolocks", it's no doubt based on probabilities. Ergo while the actual points can't possibly match the prediction for each individual game, the total over a series of games is a reasonable statistic.

The last eight seasons in the PL we have finished within the range of 41 - 49 points per season. Given we’re exactly on target for that this season with 23 points at halfway it hardly needs a computer to predict we’ll finish between 42 - 48

I think it’s always unfair with these comparisons, but I think it’s remarkable that Roy managed to achieve the same number of points when he never saw 80m of investment in one transfer window.

It may have been different but I would have liked to see Roy given the backing pardew and Big Sam received to see how far he could have taken us. Instead, he had to keep us in the league on a shoestring.

I like Viera and I think he has far exceeded my expectations, I have never been so excited going to Selhurst park. But his hand has been a lot more favourable than Roy’s.

But Hodgson inherited an already established, experienced and expensive squad, pardew didn't. Hodgson done what was asked, playing the worst football we've seen since we've been in the league. Better than doing a bad job and seeing us relegated but he didn't do a great job, even if he spent 80 million we would have played the same.

The only manager we've had who completely exceeded expectations was pulis who performed a miracle, after that pardew gave us a top 10 finish with an fa cup final, our second best season In the clubs history. With viera being an inexperienced manager taking over a club going through a huge transition, bookies faves to get relegated I'd say his so far exceeded expectations. Roy done what was needed, thanks but I'm so glad he is no longer manager.

I’ve no desire to start the Roy debate again and I felt it was probably the right time for a change but the squad he inherited was on its knees and the only fit centre forward was Freddie Ladapo. Allardyce thought the squad was so good he walked out.

Every manager has to deal with injuries, he inherited a squad that included pva, wan bissaka, cabaye, Loftus cheek, Townsend, who would all arguably walk into our starting 11 now. It also included a 30 million pound striker and defender. We also had the 8th highest wage bill in the league at the time. Poor Roy I don't know how he managed it.

Allardyce came In because he knew the squad was good enough to keep up, 6 months work with a great bonus at the end, he was never interested in the job long term

Also Roy was 73 at the end (I think) with the best will in the world hardly of an age where you would embark on a squad rebuild project - once he got to his 70s my guess is the club did what it could to milk his expertise for as long as possible knowing that eventually they would have to bring someone new / younger in & at that time investment would unquestionably be needed.

Exactly.

The only reason we have now spent money is because Textor has joined the board so it is quite clear that Parish's strategy was to find a Roy like manager who could keep us in the PL on a shoe string budget until he could get new investment.

Credit to Parish and especially Roy they managed to achieve that with the added bonus that most of the players we have brought post Roy have been a hit. That is not an easy thing to do just look at how much money Brighton have spent on flops compared to us.

I think talk of £30 mil strikers is a bit of a reach knowing his contribution. RLC and Cabaye left at the end of the season have played some fantastic football and were never adequately replaced.

Allardyce took some time to turn things around hence the £40 mil January window. He also made reference to recruitment a few days before he quit his two and half year contract.

With regard to Viera and this season I think he and our recruitment have been excellent overall. The division is harder than ever before. The acquisition of two young ball playing centre backs and Gallagher has given us the tools to play on the front foot albeit at the possible expense of aerial / defensive solidity. I guess that's the trade off.

Roy started with an immense handicap but a good team. No investment meant the teams in the last couple of years were very limited in what they could do hence why we offloaded so many players after Roy finished. Yes we were handicapped by a 30 million defender and a 30 million striker who hardly played (even when picked), thanks for giving Roy credit for that.

Our play got poorer and poorer as the squad aged and played from closer and closer to our own penalty area as they got slower and slower. I do not think there are many managers that would have done so well given the squad we had available.

You cannot blame the wage bill on Roy, he hardly had any money to change things did he?

RLC was injured for half of his 1 year loan period.

We were all crying out for PVA to be dropped long before he was.

Cabaye was in his swansong, but a great servant to our club.

Townsend is doing really well at Everton now isn't he?

Roy had to go as we have to look longer term. PV is doing brilliantly and the new team are a pleasure to watch. If we can stay up this year and we recruit a couple more like these we could have few more good years in the Prem.

Biggest difference for me is I actually enjoy watching us play and spend the week looking forward to match days - we’ve very quickly become a really good side to watch.

Let’s live in the present and not worry about the past. All I can say is I have enjoyed our performances this season and especially our home form. Long May it continue.
