James Webb telescope

More fascinating imagery coming from the telescope. The scale is just mind blowing. I find reading about these findings fascinating yet probably understand about 5% of what it talks about haha. Humbling stuff.

Ha ha, even I wonder how much time it takes to "dumb-down" their technical talk so people like me can marvel at their magic If ever you want a brilliant read on space stuff, pitched at people like me, try Stephen Hawking "Black Holes and Baby Universes". Short chapters in plain english, covering a wealth of topics. And the new photos are truly wonderous, and their explanations even more so

I appreciated the images & the description related to how they can see things in the past i.e they can see the image & calculate the time it takes for the image to reach us - I was always too embarrassed to ask

At a certain distance away the stars just don't move and so they use other techniques for that and I have to admit...while being a complete layman, I regard them as somewhat less certain.

Some kind of measurement of light isn't it? I suppose a few million miles out, or even a couple of billion miles out, are not much at the kind distances being talked about.

For distances where trig doesn't help they use something called a 'standard candle' if I remember correctly.....something to do with a certain type of explosion always being the same strength and so they gauge the distance based upon changed the signal is....something like that. She was interviewed for the national news, a couple of years ago, as she was in charge of the “net” that was collecting space debris. She laughed afterwards as the interviewer didn’t really understand what she was talking about, so she had to dumb down her answers. Sorry it was 4 years ago Edited by Spiderman (02 Oct 2022 11.57am)
