Hard to comment because from where we were sitting, it was hard to get a sense of the angle when Benteke headed the ball. It appeared to me he was off to the side of the goal and while it was a definite chance it wasn't a sitter. However, those who were watching on TV will have had a better sight of it all. My first reaction, for what it's worth, was that he should have got it on target whether he scored or not. Either way, the chance was nothing like his second goal at Burnley which WAS a sitter and which he put away with ease. Also thought the start of that sequence last night, I think it was Gallagher who got through and had the original chance, and that was a better opportunity than Beneteke's at the end of the sequence. There were a couple of moments last night where I recall we wasted half-chances because we were too slow pulling the trigger. Our real problems, as Vieira noted, are that our last pass is frequently quite poor. For the amount of possession that we have these days, we don't create an awful lot of clear cut opportunities. Things tend to break down on the edge of the oppositions box. And (see above), when do have that half chance, there seems to be an unwillingness to shoot. I don't know if that's lack of confidence but you can't always look for the next pass and hope to end up passing the ball into the net.

Such rubbish from you two, our performance improved so much with him when he came on and it is quite obvious how much he's improved under PV, it wasn't as easy a chance as you think because he had a covering defender running across him and their keeper still to beat and he'd be the first to say with his decent form that he should've been at least on target ..our biggest mistake last night was not making subs during Leeds best spell around the hour mark because it was quite evident we needed a change then. Didn't even read past here, because TP read my mind. Great post.

Agree. It's not just the missed chances - his passing is absolutely atrocious and I don't know if I've ever seen a striker with worse movement. Absolutely 0 poaching instincts, doesn't press, has one bit of movement to peel to the back post and hope it gets stood up.. the one time that actually paid off yesterday, he missed a free header from 6 yards. Did anyone notice the shot from the edge of the area? That's half a chance for any competent top level forward to at least work the keeper - he put it a mile wide. When are we finally going to cut our losses and just get rid? 1) Did you see the assist he gave for Ayew last year? His passing is far from atrocious. 2) One of his goals from earlier in the season was from exactly the same position and situation you're referring to. He buried it. So change the record hey?

How many times were we fouled when in very promising positions outside their box? ..also they did do an awful lot of niggly fouls to slow us down, these moments are never discussed, I recall kouyate receiving quite a bashing, Leeds certainly watched Villa and their behaviour in slowing us down.

From my perspective it wasn't a sitter. Tekkers had a tight angle to put it into and didn't make it but that happens. At least he hit it well, put it down with force so just the angle off. Having time to reflect on the game we were unfortunate not to get at least a point from it.

All he needs is some decent crosses and service.

This is right. I watched the game on TV and it wasn't a sitter at all. It also went just the other side of the post, so was unlucky. We looked much more of a threat with him in the side. However I think we substituted the wrong player. Zaha needed to go off and to spend the next game with 60 mins on the bench and a coach in his ear. He is responsible for most of our good positions breaking down. He has lost pace, but not adjusted his game to compensate. Ayew, for much of the game, looked a much more serious threat.
For the avoidance of doubt any comments in response to a previous post are directed to its ideas and not at any, or all, posters personally. |

It was an absolute sitter like the two against Newcastle and the header against Burnley. Clearly he brings physical presence and an option....but at a price.

He is scoring more as he gets more opportunities and also missing more as he gets more opportunities. Somewhere there must be stats of his goal scored and sitters missed number, also a what if of how many extra points we would have if all else equal and the sitters had been converted. It's all history now but would be curious to see what the stats show.

One pass last year - wow - what a great return from a £30m player on £100k/week - one pass!!!!!

I'm not in the anti Benteke group, but I have to say that it's all very well us looking more dangerous when he's introduced, but means nothing when he misses arguably the best chance we had all night. I keep hearing PV using the word '' frustrating '' in his post match interviews, and Benteke is the most frustrating of players. As a club we have historically had players that not only put a shift in but also look like they have. Think Wright, Bright, Shipperly, AJ, Murray to name but a few. Benteke doesn't fit into that category - is that making him look worse than he actually is ??

When you have to go back 18 months to find one decent pass, which was 12 yards along the ground, that tells me all I need to know. He had a pass success rate of 59% last season for goodness sake.
