Norwood Junction definitely handles the after game numbers better - possibly because of the funnel effect helping people to be off the road whilst waiting to enter the station - maybe the club should prioritise Norwood junction as the advised / preferred station for travel on all its communications ?

Or walk to East Croydon, miss all the chaos and probably get a fast train to wherever you are going.

Finally will the club get beaten over the head with the “lack”of infrastructure argument as a reason not to allow the new stand? Back in the 1970's and early 1980's when games drew attendances of 35000+ on a regular basis, apart from having to queue, I can't recall any problems getting a train home afterwards. Even after that special Friday night when over 51000 were crammed into Selhurst, I didn't have a problem afterwards at the station. I was in the Army at the time, based at Middle Wallop in Hampshire. I even got back in time to sink a celebratory pint or two in the NAAFI

Maybe southern rail (or whoever is responsible for the station infrastructure) were reluctant to do anything when we got promoted, expecting us to get relegated within a couple of years anyway but now we have been in the top flight considerably longer a solution really needs to be found before an accident occurs followed by an official investigation. its not an acceptable stand point for anyone to say that, "well its only busy on matchdays" with some pour soul ending up under the front wheels of a bus or truck because the rail queues + pedestrian on pavement traffic wasnt properly managed would be a terrible outcome. It does make you wonder if the club & the rail service(s) do actually talk to each other.

I've taken pictures recently at Selhurst Station and written by email to Govia who own Southern Railway,I did get a reply which wasn't helpful so I emailed back again and have heard nothing. The situation after matches is still awful they obviously intend to do nothing.

Well that’s a development since I first started this thread. The barriers were open previously. So it seems that by way of response to concerns they have actually made matters worse.

Looks like Selhurst Station is closed again today.
It's 106 miles to Chicago, we got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark... and we're wearing sunglasses. |
