The thing is, as I believe you said previously, you have to get people on board with 'going green' in ways that doesn't alienate. No wonder what we think of the pace of change here or abroad, one surefire way to get people to pay zero attention to any of it is to be deemed as going after Christmas, or Diwali or Fireworks night or whatever, rather than the bigger picture. Much like someone trying to improve their physique, there will always be an occasional 'cheat day' on the cards that isn't too much to worry about in the big picture. I would think that even in a utopian future scenario where we're on top of these challenges, we would likely still have room for such days . Yup I did but I really meant here, this report refers to India and the very real problems they have with air pollution. Many Indians still use coal for cooking and that is not going to change anytime soon. This has not helped that. However you make a valid point maybe I am being a killjoy. I am just going for a walk in my plastic trainers then I'll have a drink of coke from my plastic bottle and for lunch I will be having a lot of meat. Going to London to see the car show at Regents street (assuming they're aren't any protestors.) Edited by Badger11 (06 Nov 2021 10.56am)

The air looks positivity apocalyptic there at times! Quote

At least recycle a couple of coke bottles into a second pair of shoes!

I have mixed feelings on this subject. I have very fond memories of bonfire night when I was a child, in the days when Halloween was not on the radar. I used to love the build up to November 5th - making a Guy, and buying the fireworks, and the anticipation as the day grew closer. And the artwork on the fireworks was great, and very evocative. We now have a dog that is paralysed with fear when she hears fireworks going off. Part of the problem is that fireworks can be bought all year round and you never know when someone is going to be letting them off. Also, the fireworks you can buy now are much more powerful and noisy than the standard garden fireworks we used to have as children.

I would not allow private purchase of fireworks. Local councils would license authorised displays only.

TheGreatGorbo started this thread last year by discussing the damage fireworks cause to the environment. I've just read someone's estimate that around £40m'worth will be let off this year. You have to say that bonfire night seems immune to COP27 and the economic crisis. Old Guy Fawkes has a lot to answer for. Some might say it's a shame his plot failed.
Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled. |

It was originally called the 'Gunpowder and accelerated environmental damage plot' however they thought it wouldn't catch on back then.
Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!! |

Lewes will be effectively shut. Road closures and Parking restrictions everywhere from 4.00pm tonight until 1am Sunday all access routes closed. We left site 11.00am this morning to avoid getting caught. Enjoy Originally posted by Forest Hillbilly
Lewes have 5 bonfire societies in the 1 town. That makes up 5 separate parade routes, meeting up at the bonfire site. Last year police closed all access routes to Lewes by late afternoon, "to prevent outsiders" enjoying the night. I understand some sections of the northern Ireland community are well into bonfires

I loved fireworks night as a kid round at the cousins house in Shirley. If I had a choice, forget boring old Christmas and lets set fire to shed loads of bangers...
