The main difference in our style this season is that we close down much better. We conceded ground far too easily before. Our passing from the back is also much improved. The back four has been the same every week, so far, and that has helped a lot.

The improvements are largely about having better players and better coaching staff.

PV can take some credit for encouraging more energetic football, but it is not just about him. We actually spent money, and that is something that has been needed for several years.

This all day.
We press and we play away from our defence a lot more. We could have done this with last seasons players - but it's the addition of CG that makes this work so well.
this means we have our attacking players playing as a unit a lot more - and in greater numbers.
Couple this with the 2 new CBs, and it means we can actually keep the ball and get it up pitch without simply handing it back to the oppo.

OK so time for me to eat humble pie. Think it's been coming and after the events over the weekend and today its the nail in the coffin.

In the summer I argued about how frustrating it was that we seemed so close to getting NES only for it to be scuppered by his demands at the last second and my argument was that we should just do it to get him......(ahem)

I then argued that I was sceptical about getting PV as manager and that I felt people were putting too much into the fact he was a world class player but this does not necessarily mean he is a good manager.......(ahem)

It seems hard to argue against me being very wrong and it seems only right that I put myself in the Homesdale Online stocks and take whatever you wish to throw at me!

Like you Im going to do the same as I thought like you and now waiting my turn in the stocks..
In fairness to Nuno, he was in the wrong club for his style of football, but it means we dodged a bullet. As for Viera well hes proved to be the one for us.

It's quite clear that most of us are in your gang Mwncisee.

No need for humble pie though, just savour the moment and hope it lasts.

Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled.

I think it's a tad early to pass judgement on PV as a manager. We have had significant investment on good players and the test for PV won't be here until we run into poor form.....when the players get use to him and the 'I'm inspired to play for PV' stuff stops...then it'll be interesting. That said, I'm enjoying PV style of play and again, I have to say Freedman's transfer activity was excellent.

I had no issues with PV incoming as I think all managers need to get their feet under the table and have their team playing their methods before you can know what you're dealing with.

I was skeptical about Vieira but have been impressed.

My pie eating will wait until the end of the season though.

We have become a pressing team.

Almost all pressing teams have energy dips.

We need to see whether we have one and how hard it hits us.

Because despite our good play, our points per game has been the same as last year.

If you want to live in a world full of kindness, respect and love, try to show these qualities.

I agree it's early doors and I was one who was hopeful the second time Vieira's name was mentioned. I was also not in favour of Nuno.

We are still very much in the honeymoon period with PV enjoying the refreshing change in style and seeing our t4am playing on the front foot.

However, other teams will work out our new style before too long and will make any adjustments they feel necessary to counter it. We will drop points against inferior teams (as we did against Newcastle) and will have our off days and, as you say, a dip in energy and consequently in form. Just as it was premature to judge PV on the opening few games as some were doing, so it is premature to do so now. The end of the year should give us a better idea of things, by when we will have played all the other teams at least once.

As for the points tally, I suggest that we had far harder opening 10 games this season than last. Indeed, if we exclude Brentford our points return in comparison to the corresponding fixtures last year is favourable, namely 11 from 9 as opposed to just 5 from 9 last year. Furthermore there's not a single fixture in which we did worse this year than last and the additional 6 points came in our games against Spurs, Newcastle and Citeh. The next 10 games should prove enlightening. If we exclude Watford and Norwich our return from the 8 corresponding fixtures last year was 12 points (4 wins and 4 defeats). If we better that this year, then we will be comfortably placed, especially if we beat the two promoted clubs as well.

Agree with you on the players mentioned but surprised few people mention James McArthur. He has impressed me massively. On the downside there is Luca who seems to have lost the little pace he had together with his passing being suspect at best. I would not be surprised for him to become a squad player or leave soon.

For a relative young manager i like the way he is handling himself in the press conferences. He could have taken credit for the Olise substitution against City but gave the credit to his team. It is a team game and he was also very specific in his praise for how everyone defended as a team against City.
I like as well the improvement that is showing in our existing players. 3 that spring to my mind are particularly Joel Ward but also Tyrick Mitchell and Christian Benteke. I saw Mitchell lose the ball against Brentford when he was forced to come inside on his right foot but this has been addressed. Ward looks like he has got a yard extra pace from somewhere and Benteke looks back to his best.

Well that'll be me I can't quite believe what I am seeing, The style of play isn't something I have seen at Palace even under our successful attack minded mangers Sir Steve Big Mal & Venners.
Not that i am complaining but just speechless and can't believe it will last but by lord i hope I am wrong wrong and
wrong in every way

fair play to you mate. I do wonder, whether the bunch of fans who were absolutely adamant that we had reached our limit as a club under Roy, and could expect no better in terms of quality of football or a higher finish up the table, are able to take a step back and see that we are raising the bar again. That's not necessarily aimed at you, but there was a vocal group who just could not imagine a world where we're playing the sort of football that we are now. I know there's still a long way to go, but even the most ardent cynic must see that we're onto something here with PV. Even if they wouldn't admit it to anyone.

Not to bang on (but I am) but when we're next faced with a crossroads or some adversity, will the experience of something better that we're seeing now dampen their cynicism, or can they just not imagine things ever being better despite evidence showing that there is always a way to improve things within our means.

this is the thing right, sometimes there are external forces at play that pull the rug from underneath us and it all comes crashing down. When Freedman quit as manager we were 4th and when Bruce left we were top (I think?). Who saw either of those things coming.

Massive difference between get behind the ball, a la Roy and go get the ball, a la Patrick.

He deserves so much credit for:

1) Getting the players to a level of fitness they have probably never experienced before.

2) Convincing them they are good enough for this league despite the rumblings (Ward and Mitchell in particular and Jimmy Mc is playing the best football of his career).

3) Bringing in a damn fine coach. The plaudits for Roberts are huge. What he did with a bang average Welsh team was incredible.

4) Inspiring the players to play a different brand of football and instilling a winning mentality. How often in the past would we have celebrated draws. The players now are gutted if they draw.

It's all a different mindset and its mostly down to our new manager. Long may it continue.

Agree

Main factors are vastly improved fitness, Robert’s as coach and general freshness in approach. Roy did a great job, but it was getting stale.

Anyone know (has bothered to count) how many of our goals have come directly from winning the ball back high?

And of those how many Gallagher won?
