They are professional footballers, who go through all different types of in-game, shape, possession, strengths of the opposition/individuals, how best to counter mental fatigue in a game, what went well and what didn’t the previous game analysis.

So my question is:

Why not try to do everything in your power to give the opposition a throw-in rather than a corner at any point if you are susceptible to conceding a 1 goal lead.

Arsenal corner should’ve been prevented but ok - the Newcastle game don’t give away cheap corners.

I don’t get why they tend not to learn from past costly mistakes.

Was it a cheap corner though - Ward was clearly pushed....

In the last few seasons we’ve been susceptible in the last five minutes of each half. Maybe it’s a concentration problem but it’s happened with several combinations in defence.

Bring in Roy Hodgson? He knows the secret to boring yet effective play which minimizes scoring threats. Seriously, I'm pleased we've played so well, and I trust PV to figure out which players have the intelligence and discipline – which matter more than pace and ball skills – to protect a lead.

As for formation and tactics, if we can't maintain possession in the midfield, we should send long diagonal passes to our wingers cross-field. If they go too far, they'll result in a throw-ins rather than a goal kicks.

So few teams do this well and I've never understood it. Leicester did it so effectively in their title winning season. Not just to waste time but as the first ball of a counter attack. Ping it into the corner and give Vardy something to chase. Often he wouldn't get it, but he'd invariably put enough pressure on the fullback to make them put it away for a throw.

Even more effective to protect a lead as it give you the opportunity to push the lines up, and waste some time walking up to take the throw on.

Sam Allardyces'Bolton had game management down to a tee. Played the ball upfield into the corners and forced the opposition to defend deep, either in open play or from throw ins.

Keep calm and play the ball out to two up front because if 9 is not enough to defend a lead we are not worthy to be a PL team.

To have a ball holding midfielder would help to slow things down
and launch a swift counter. Time to give such a player a go?

Step forward Will Hughes ...

His form today is below where he was two or three years ago. We need a midfielder to terrify the opposition with blistering pace toward their goal.

Wikipedia informs me he retired from international football in Mar-21. I was not aware.

We have to learn to defend corners. That’s it.

The answer is to keep possession and try and score another goal. Hard I know if the team is tiring and the oppo are desperate to attack.

Score a second goal - is the right answer!

recent draws shows the importance of taking advantage of opportunities. Nobody to blame but ourselves

I felt even after getting Leicester back to 2-2 we seemed content

Easy to over complicate things.
This season we got 2 new centre backs and we replaced Reidwald with Gallagher. MacArthur and Luca back.
Then we got Edouard for Townsend.
Benteke playing better and Zaha.
Put PV and his coaches in the mix and you have a revitalised looking Palace.
