He still only joined us as a scholar and played for both the 18s and 23s with us - he is still someone you'd consider when looking at ROI of the academy. We swept up Rak Sakyi from Chelsea at 16/17, exactly the same as Mitchell.

over time I'd like to think that the benefits are: -being able to remain in Prem 2 will have academy playing to a higher level/making them better/more prepared to step into first-team football I would have thought that there are specific, measurable objectives and key performance indicators built into those areas.

The revenue point is key - Chelsea have made an absolute fortune off their academy in the last few years; Abraham They've also managed to get Mount, James, Christensen, Hudson-Odoi and now Loftus-Cheek (back on the scene) and Chalobah in and around the first team. A certain Conor Gallagher will fetch a hell of a fee if they end up selling.

Chelsea have got a model that works pretty well. A lot were surprised then they let Livramento and Guehi go as they were both highly rated, but that in turn allowed them to get Lukaku. So it works for them. They do also have deep enough pockets to hoover up anyone that can kick a ball. For all the Guehi’s and Mount’s that are good enough to play or sell, there will be hundreds of others that aren’t. Numbers game for them, and they will cast the net wide.

It is interesting that Chelsea's current U23 squad is 12th in the league ahead of just Everton and Derby County but then most of their quality U23s are either in their first team squad or are on loan at other PL clubs or in the Championship. Gallagher is just 21. Can you imagine him or Gilmour playing on the U23s? Chelsea have a track record of providing young players who are generally successful in their loan spells at PL and Championship clubs (and European one). For our academy to be profitable (and it will need to be to survive) we need to start producing players who can go on successful loans to at least Championship clubs where they can play in the shop window and either show they are potential PL players or are good enough to be bought by a Championship club.

Taking into account the investment in the set-up and time for academy products to go through the system and get to first-team age/ability, I'd say at least 5-years before you can assess whether it's a successful venture.

Sounds about right to me Chelsea is a very ambitious model to set ourselves against of course. The primary difference is that there it's simply a bonus if they get a first team player through from their academy. Our likely goal surely is to produce more home grown products for our own first team. Just 2/3 in a five year span who are first team players as opposed to squad fillers could be worth as much as 40 million - factoring in inflation. Your point about loans is still perfectly valid mind. I'm interested to see how we progress here. There are currently around 7/8 who are in age group international squads and even allowing for some wastage that should/could mean 4 or so who are viable "commercial" prospects in the next couple of years.

I've learnt stuff from this thread. Many excellent contributions. I've certainly learnt just how important networked, good and discerning scouts can be for a club. I've had a little window into how the best academies operate....fascinating stuff.
