It's race and gender diversity just shoved unapologetically into your face these days, with scripts written by non binary arts students and directed by someone equally detached from any real life experience. The writers just try to put in as much woke crap as possible. Hey presto, you have a series. Add in some indie bongo music and you get either a Netflix or BBC series.

A talented guy, no doubt. I always liked his Cowboy Dreams song. He did a musical with Sting I believe years back, so keeps plugging away musically!

Who would expect James Gandalfini to extort money out of you ? i had always thought Timothy Spall to be a Brummie. Amazed he is one of us. And Spall being from Battersea i am thrilled it will upset millwall.

I worked in Germany in 1972 as a bricklayer [ gave it up as my back went ] and the first series was very near to how it was . The second and onwards series lost it's way and I lost all interested in it .

Nice show with down to earth characters simply trying to get by whilst experiencing extraordinary situation. It's a tried and tested formula for good, simply, TV. The problem with American TV is that it's always written to a target demographic they can sell too. Also, typical of America is that every series has to be bigger, louder and more epic than the last. There's a few Netflix Original shows I like, but you always get the feeling that the programme was developed by A) Looking at a demographic they need to sell more content to B) Finding things that demographic used to be interested in C) Make an programme. All the plot lines are far too obvious. British writers tend to write something they think is good, and then look to sell it. Which is a much better way of writing creative TV.

I do think there's a different approach across the pond. It's very much 'follow the money'. You also see it in the way that even quality series go on far too long and often go off the rails as they attempt to squeeze the last bit of commercial success out of them.

I’m on the Facebook group and it’s amazing the impact the first two series had. Even now, 35 years later people travel across the country to visit places where it was filmed. Nottingham, Derbyshire and obviously Newcastle. Also Ally Frazier’s villa in Spain is much visited
