Putting NATO at risk ? French Diplomats recalled. Remember the Exocet missiles you Frenchies kept selling the Argentines during the Falklands ? All's fair in love and war.

Totally incorrect, as usual. France sold 5 exocet missiles to Argentina before the Falklands. No missiles were supplied to Argentina during the conflict, in fact Mitterand supported us and placed an embargo on arms sales and assistance to the regime at the start of the conflict. The defence secretary Sir John Nott said France was our greatest ally in the war.

I suspect its because the EU are currently putting feelers out to the UK about joining up with them in some kind of new defence pact because other than the French, nobody else has any kind of significant military capacity. Our military and the French also co-operate far more closely than either nation cares to admit and I suspect its better to paint this as a US-Australian stitch up with the UK just along for the Anglo-centric ride. That makes sense. Populist dumb French thought is anti Anglo. Populist dumb Brit thought is anti French. Meanwhile, both governments keep the Entente Cordial strong for reasons that would be obvious to a whelk, but quiet so as not to alienate a swedge of voters.

In short the Argies wasted a lot of time and never got their hands on them which was to our benefit. Still don't like French politicians though.

There was a British Intelligence operation that posed as French Arms traders. They sold faulty exocets to the Argentines. There was a documentary on this. Ones that hit our ships could have even been those as, off the top of my head from memory, the warheads didn't go off. Unfortunately the rocket fuel caused the fires. Cutbacks on missile defence, a faulty system, and cutbacks on uniforms caused many deaths and injuries on the ships. I hope it's better these days.

Nothing brightens up a Sunday like annoying the French. Their hubris is boundless Well done the UK and Australia. Biden probably didn't understand what was going on, thought the sub deal was a delivery of foot longs.
Responsibility Deficit Disorder is a medical condition. Symptoms include inability to be corrected when wrong, false sense of superiority, desire to share personal info no else cares about, general hubris. It's a medical issue rather than pure arrogance. |

I don't mind annoying the French but I wonder about this deal which is essentially anti Chinese, I have no love for them but why are we getting involved in this.

The UK a 'vassal state' of the USA, according to angry France. The truth always hurts. The PM and new foreign minister already flying to Washington to get their orders.
