I like this, but it's a bit too gung-ho. We'd need some defensive steel in there. Also no leaders on the pitch.

It also depends who we are playing at home to Watford would be different to away at Man City

It’s a surprise to me that many appear to be discarding Mcarthur so easily.
He’s been our most consistent midfield player over a number of years performing a variety of roles.
At the moment he’s one of the first names on the team sheet for me and it is evident from comments made by Vieira that he too is a fan, and I think Mcarthur will retain the captaincy if Luka doesn’t recover his place.
Of course he’s getting older and I don’t expect him to play all 38 games and eventually he will need replacing.
I suspect the purchase of Hughes reveals one eye to the future.
At the moment I like the sound of Mcarthur, Hughes and Gallagher in midfield.
They are all busy , workmanlike players with a good range of skills.
The issue will be how to accommodate Olise and Eze in the future, but surely that’s a nice problem to have.

This is precisely my preferred XI and system too.

Although I am swayed a bit by sprites point about Hughes v McArthur, I disagree with him when he argues that Eze is wasted as one of the midfield three. The opposite is true in my opinion, he's wasted on the wing, and developed noticeably when playing in midfield at the end of last season.

Surprised to see you opt for Schlupp in defence - he's appeared there 4 times in the league in the past 3 seasons - suspect Antonio has played more often in defence for WH in the same time frame.

There's a case perhaps for using him as a wingback if we have a back 3 but it seems more than slightly ambitious to put him there in a back 4 when the cover from central midfield is relatively minimal - certainly by our recent standards

Huge Schlupp fan but think he's long since been repurposed and his history there is irrelevant - don't actually remember rating him as a defender in any event. And our left back playing behind Wilf is always likely to be more exposed imo

I think Schlupp at left back in at home in a game you expect to win is a great choice, away to Liverpool or Man city may be different, horses for courses

Although i liked Roy and think he did a good job, he would still play a solid narrow back four and two defensive midfielders when the opponent was playing one up front, hence poor home form

I like Schlupp at left back. He's strong and fast, and can overlap well. No problem with Mitchell, but I think Schlupp is probably the better player right now, and given that he can play left back I'd use him there precisely because Zaha (and Eze if we play a 433 with him on the left of midfield as I suspect we may in time) don't offer much protection. I think Schlupp could handle that a bit better than Mitchell.
