The problem is that this site is very much Guntri & Penge Eagle's baby (Guntri is the webmaster and designer/ Penge content/editor) and he simply doesn't have the time to update, however much money gets put in the kitty - he does have a job that pays for his life, like the rest of us, and that, unsurprisingly is his priority.

No good going to the club about this, BBS is the 'official' Palace fans forum, and Hol has always reveled in it's independence and freedom as the 'unofficial' one.

It may be old and slow, but it's the Hol we all know and love: be very careful what you wish for if you want others to get involved!

Just seems a shame if we can't find a mutually acceptable way to move the site forward becky.

I don't know much about this sort of thing, but isn't there a way for the current webmaster to transfer ownership?

I concur with some that it would be useful to know the figure we're trying to hit and would definitely provide more motivation to reach it.

This thread seems to have hit the buffers, but it would be good to know what the future holds for the HOL site.

I hadn't realised, until the other day reading all this, that HOL was basically created by one person. Very well I might add. It has been slow recently in some situations when there is a high level of activity. I just assumed it was a normal volume issue.

In general it seems to hang together pretty well, but if it is built on old protocols, how much longer will it continue to give us service? We can't just wait for it to collapse and fail completely.

Can either Guntrisoft or Penge Eagle give us an idea what, if anything, needs to be done to keep the site running properly for us? It will clearly require funds, but how much I wonder? It would be good if one of you could explain.

agree.
personally i think HOL is fine.
can be a bit slow some days, but you can get that with a large site also.
In some cases it may be the individuals laptop / pc thats not too fast ?

To be honest I haven't noticed any deterioration as it runs fine most of the time.

Match days the site slows to a halt but it has been like that for years due presumably to the weight of numbers.

Do the owners really want to throw money at it to solve a problem that only happens for a few hours once a week.

The site has worked fine for me and I'm on a very slow connection on a Greek island

I'm OK with it too most of the time. It just appeared that the message was that it was old and worn round the edges (I know the feeling) and that it needed updating to keep it running properly.

Presumably someone, somewhere will pick up on it if the site starts to fall over.

Guntri does keep an eye on it, and is pretty quick to react if there is a real problem or a crash (as has happened on a few occasions).

It's not really about the money to run the site (although that helps), but it is the time it would take to completely overhaul it and rewrite it in a more modern format, with all the whistles and bells that people want ....... which Guntri simply doesn't have time to do at the moment.

Surfing through Hol is a bit like supporting Palace: it's hard work at times, but you wouldn't want to go anywhere else.

A revamp is on the cards, but I've been hearing that since about 20015.......

I should think that's what it comes down to really, or rather the time involved as has been said by others. 98% of the time it's fine. Occasionally a page will stop loading or slow during match day but that's not the end of the world .

Thanks becky, reassuring reply. I have to say that I find HOL much easier to navigate than either bbs or Comrades. But not as easy as supporting Palace, that just comes naturally.

Not knowing entirely how the service works, I wonder if one aspect is the backend database? Could it be that the number of topics / posts has grown over the years, and that's causing it to creak? Sometimes SQL DBs (and queries to it) don't scale that well when the number of rows ramps up.

That said, I've also noted that during games the site takes a while to load - so that's either lots of concurrent SQL queries, or possibly server load - so maybe something can be done with Apache as well.

Anyway, I do love the HOL, so I hope there's some improvements that can be made!

I must disagree with you there as I think that the BBS is much easier to navigate as it has the facility to take you directly to the first unread post in the thread whereas on here you have to scroll through a whole page to find where you last left off.

The main problem with the BBS is that the signal to noise ratio is too low and there is too much waffle and insulting before you actually get to any useful information

Comrades is also built on more modern dedicated forum software but I don't spend time there as it's mainly just a home for people banned from the two major sites

The HOL may be a little ancient, but is still well better than a lot of big teams fans forums that use standard "old" code that makes them look all the same too.

Poor old Guntri doesn't have the time, I will be retiring soon but don't code but am quite willing to help in some way as I am an IT person.

I went on one of the Arsenal boards to see how they were suffering ,they are using free forum software that my rugby club abandoned 15 years ago.
