Well that's a real shame that you weren't given longer. Any decent employer would do.

And Luka came on against Ipswich so I don't think he has been off for 2 months.

Regardless of the time or wage I'd rather our club did the decent thing and gave our employees the time they need

Can anyone explain to me why we always wait until the last minute to fill a yawning gap in the squad, the result of which means we pay over the top for the player and again for his wages. FFS, why didn't Dougie and Parish line up a centre forward and full back before the window opened, knowing that we were hiring an unproven manager who has no choice but to change the system - or we should have recruited Sean Dyche to perpetuate the old ways ...... beyond belief!

I’m one that can’t explain it, so no help on that, what is really hard to understand this year is why would you dispense with so many well used players ,first team options, without lining up replacements early anyway? It’s obvious no such thing was done, or why is it still completely unclear as to whether any sort of deal can be got over the line. It could be there have some agreements to do a deal as late as possible, but even that is a wing and a pray, as anything can change such an agreement. It’s such a risky strategy , one can only think , Parish, and Co thought we could fiddle through anyway.

1, why was Ward given a two tear contract and not a one
2, if Viera only wants to play one DM, we have already, Jairo, Kouyate and Luka, so if he wants someone else out one.
3.The Luka situation doesn't add up to me, think some porkies being told.
4. Benteke and Ayew are not good enough and need replacing, maybe one in this window and one the next.
5.Mateta is young so we might as well keep him till the end of the season, then if we have to buy him and he isn't up to it, sell him.
6. we desperately need a wide player and CF in this window

1. Hardly something to get worked up about. It looks like Joel will be first choice RB until Clyne is recovered from Covid. Next year I expect Joel will be back up to either a new signing ...or Ferguson if he ever materialises.
2. There's enough people on here moaning about this trio - perhaps PV wants to sign an upgrade in what we currently have.
3. Maybe, maybe not. I don't think you can benchmark bereavement leave - everybody reacts in their own way, all you can wish for is an understanding employer.
4. So I assume you would have added these two to the list of out of contract players, therefore adding to the number of incoming players required to form a squad. Given where we are today with that, it's as well we kept these two.
5. It's all about opinions, but the goal against Brighton aside, I've seen nothing to suggest Mateta has what we need. But you would buy him, and potentially see him continue to fail just because he's young ?? And who is going to buy a failed striker at a reasonable fee ?? ( well, we would but in this case we already have )
6. Those are two of the positions that are being looked at. If - as is entirely possible - we don't get those players in then I refer to my response to 4.

Looking at our whole squad, how many would get in the first 11 of the likes of Southampton, Burnley, Brightscum, Wolves, Watford?

Probably three, maybe four. And Zaha wouldn't get so much patience anywhere else as he does here.

Grim.

Who are all these well used player we god rid of without replacements?

Andros in fairness was offered a contract, but didn't sign it. Olise was signed to replace him.

PVA was a mistake IMHO, but most people on here hated him anyway

For any posters not quite in the know with regards to football, real life isn't like FIFA where if you "want rid" you put the player up for sale, choose the highest offer of all six teams that contacted you the next day and then pack his bags for him the following, finally recycling that cash for an upgrade.
Does not work like that.

in terms of Luka i wonder if he is suffering from long covid too. I'm sure he got it last year and has never been the same since. If it's effecting his breathing then clearly he will struggle to run. Club are being very quiet so i suspect things are more complicated.
In terms of his recent bereavement people react in different ways - they are humans. If he needs time, the club must give him that.

Just looked at our team v Arsenal, last game of the last season.

Centre defence is now better (Cahill and Tomkins played that day) and both Ward and Mitchell played (with Clyne and PVA on bench).

Midfield was Jeff, Kouyate, McCarthy and Andros with Wilf and Tekkers upfront.

Today with have Jimmy Mac back and Gallagher which is an improvement IMHO.

Andros appears to be the one area that hasn't been addressed yet

Cahill,
Dann
Sako,
V A ,
All taken out of defensive positions replaced up to now by two signings.
Mc, Carthy, taken out, and Eze, long term injury ,signings one loan.
Townsend, possibly covered by an injured Olise, a player as much like Eze, as Townsend.
Wickham,
Bats, loan but a position desperately short of cover which up to now we don’t have.
It really doesn’t matter who hated who , the players gone were all used at various times in the team ii the gaps left are not filled we are extremely lightweight for the demands of a full Premier league season, plus a cup. We don’t just need a team of even 15 we need a full squad containing more than just a few kids that don’t need naming in the squad, if one thing stood out in the last two seasons it was how short we were at times in an injury crisis . We are even worse off right now.

So we've lost 3 ageing CBs and replaced with real quality. I personally think letting PVA go was a mistake, but time will tell.

Wickham didn't play last season at all and Sakho played 4 times, so we wouldn't have been lost without them.

Andros replaced with Olise (unfortunate he is injured)
James M replaced with CG
3rd choice keeper for 3rd choice keeper

Eze is unfortunate, but we're going to have to make do until he is back. We are not the sort of club that can shell out 20m for cover. Ayew will have to do a job.

So granted we are still a little thin, but baring 2 injuries we are stronger than then end of last season.

We also do have a couple of kids that look like they will play a part this season.

Hopefully we can get in another another 2 or 3.

This! And even worse the upgrade doesn`t shine immediately the next time you put it in your starting 11.

Well it’s all opinions, but when you cut into an existing squad ,no matter the quality of that squad , you have to have the replacements in hand because of the demands that you face ,in particular at this level, as of yet we haven’t done that ,we are still at least two or three light, even the manager has said that much. My point was that it is extremely risky to leave it so late in covering the gaps you create. The quality of the four new signings is fine, but four doesn’t make nine in an injury crisis.
Of course if it’s business as usual, and it’s a we will get by attitude from the club and support then so be it . Whichever it will not take long to know.

I suspect (pray) that DF and SP are working hard behind the scenes, but football transfers are not easy.

It always does come down to the wire (not just Palace) and from the outside it seams mad. Surely you'd want a preseason and a settled squad?! Its accepted that after the international break you'll have a better idea how everyone looks.

I suspect unlike the big boys who can pick the player they want, we are more after player types and value for money. e.g. Edouard or Nketiah. If Arsenal drop their asking to 10m Nketiah is good value...if they want closer to 20m we might as well go for Edouard

Will Hughes is a prime example, surely nobody has identified him as a top priority. But then he doesn't sign a contract extension, and could be available at the right price suddenly its worth looking at.
