As I understood the loan it was an obligation to buy if he made a certain number of starts. Hence I think he started very few games

That was my understanding - 15 starts was mentioned by a number of posters, so we have plenty of games left to try him out this season.

Based on what, regarding Mateta? He scored a nice goal v Brighton but other than that he has shown little to justify a place. His touch is poor, he cant make the ball stick, loses possession.

Based on his record in the Bundesliga and Ligue 1, compared to Benteke's Appalling record over the last 3 years, even a blind Squirrel finds a nut sometimes

Agree. He has work to do to improve those aspects of his game before he can be seen as a serious challenger to Benteke's position. I think he will improve and will provide PV with a different striker option.

As for Dolberg, I've explained why not in earlier posts.

No, you havent he is a quality versatile striker and a bargain if we could get him for 18/20m

So do you think he warrants a starting place based on what you have seen of him in this league with this team?

Firstly, it is most unlikely we would be able to get Dolberg for 20m. That was his purported value prior to the Euros. I would be surprised if he goes for less than 30m.

Secondly, if we have 20m to spend we have far more pressing needs in defence and midfield.

Thirdly, With Benteke, Mateta and Ayew, we have an adequate strike force for the time being.

Fourthly, Dolberg's return of 6 goals in 25 Ligue 1 appearances last year is somewhat underwhelming. Furthermore his stats from his time at Ajax (regular Dutch champions) are by no means compelling. Any half decent striker should be able to achieve those stats playing for the no. 1 team in that league.

Finally, you seem to have a jaundiced view of Benteke. Some of us are prepared to give him the chance to show that his form for most of last season wasn't a flash in the pan. It may not work out but IMO he's earned the right to prove he can carry on where he left off.

Off course you are entitled to your opinion, for me Benteke is a one trick pony, and you have to play to his strengths, i prefer quicker, direct players, but its all about opinions

Yes, he has only start two games, watch his goals on you tube for Mainz. he deserves a chance, The Bundesliga is not an rubbish league, i would definitely start with him above Benteke, but it is all about opinions

You do realize he had a purple spell at Mainz and then got injured and has since failed to recover his previous form. Your relying on youtube videos from 2018-19. after that his goal return and appearances are underwhelming. Also you point out his goals and ability in France's Ligue 1. He's only ever played twice for Lyon and scored once.

Hard to disagree with any of this. All I would add is that both benteke and Ayew might be better suited to bringing the best out of Eze, Zaha and Olise, who I imagine might be arranged behind the striker in a 4231 system, once all are fit and available, than Mateta, who really hasn't looked the part at all so far, particularly when it comes to hold up play.

If Dolberg can bring the three creative players into the game, and also be a threat running behind then he might be an upgrade, but it'll all be for very little if we don't sign more defenders and energetic midfielders.

This could be the player to be shown in the home kit.

Would be a great buy.

Thought we should have paid out for Armstrong but clearly lacking firepower.

Was impressed by what I saw of this guy in the Euros.
