And don't forget the incomparable Billy Callender - the keeper who always saved penalties. I don't think shinpads had been invented in his era, so he stuffed old copies of the Croydon Advertiser down his socks. I've just had a look at Wikipedia to find out a bit more, because I confess Billy's story had passed me by. What a sad story it is although there's not a great deal on Wiki. Anyway, well done merganser for reminding us about him.
Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled. |

Where do you get your memory from? There are certain games you remember and Everton battered us that day, but Martyn was unbelievable. We sold him to Leeds and he did go to Everton for spell. Another one that sticks in my mind, we are away to Southampton at the Dell. We take the kick off , Mark Bright plays it back to Richard Shaw who then puts it past Martyn into the net. Southampton hadn’t even touched the ball and they are 1-0 up! Ian Wright and Mark Bright turned it around and we won 3-2…

Then sadly I was there again a few days later when the Palace team didn't turn up for a League Cup tie. If I remember rightly a female ran the line. I don't know if that was the first time it ever happened or merely the first time I ever saw it.

I would like to see Jack Butland given the gloves for the rest of the season although I do really like Guaita.

I don't know if that was the first time it ever happened or merely the first time I ever saw it. The game we won 3-2 a certain Alan Shearer with hair was playing for them. We were behind the goal, it was standing at the time and someone threw a load of fake £10 notes in the air with Steve Coppell’s face printed on them. Edited by Gary St.Andrews (17 Jan 2022 8.57am)

I’m with you on this and you have got to hand it to Patrick, he managed Jacks cock up at Millwall perfectly. Would have been easy to put Guaita back in goal, but sticking with Jack has most probably helped his confidence. Jack was our best player at Brighton, let’s be honest a few years ago he was top 5 keepers in the Country.

Me too, really like Guaita, but Jack B. has earned his spot now. And with Liverpool's backs Trent and Robertson pumping in crosses, Butland will deal better with them.

This is probably an impression exaggerated by the disaster against Millwall, but his distribution from his feet seems really poor. Given the two central defenders are encouraged to pass it about, this could end badly. He did some excellent stuff against Brighton. The disallowed goal was the correct decision, but I can't help feeling he was a little feeble.

Deservedly in The Times' team of the weekend. He deserves a regular place if only because he is much more decisive with crosses - previously our biggest defensive weakness.

Prior to the Brighton game, Butland had been responsible for a howler at Millwall and done nothing of note in his other appearances. Now, one good game later, people want him as No.1. I'll reserve judgment until after a run of games should he get them.
