Personally, I believe you are spot on. Essentially these gangs were allowed to operate as part of a wider-trade off that ensured effective block voting favoured Labour in certain Northern Towns. The links between sitting Labour councillors and convicted groomers are fully established, along with files going missing from supposedly secure areas in Council buildings. And I am convinced that something similar is going on even now.

Pretty much this. How can the UK have allowed itself to become a place where this was in certain parts of the establishment condoned. In the same way the Establishment knew about Saville and nothing was done. How do these issues become untouchable. Originally posted by Matov

Responsibility Deficit Disorder is a medical condition. Symptoms include inability to be corrected when wrong, false sense of superiority, desire to share personal info no else cares about, general hubris. It's a medical issue rather than pure arrogance. |

It must be difficult to get interested when Labour are trying to sell a vision that fewer and fewer people are interested in. Actually, vision is the wrong word as that would imply a strategy longer term policy ideas. What we seem to to have a party that want's to be a noises off chunterer until a general election. The standard reply from Labour when asked what they would do on specific policies is " we wouldn't do it like that" Emily Thornberry dissing the potential Australian trade deal when there are no details and she wouldn't know the difference between Australian animal welfare practices and a man in a white van Originally posted by steeleye20
It is a struggle to get interested in by-elections or think that politicians cannot do anything other than make things worse generally. If Starmer loses here he is 'toast' according to the DA. Opening the door for Burnham. So there may well not be a labour revival here, rather a hope that his non-opposition will be gone. Edited by HKOwen (22 May 2021 12.44am)

They still don't get it in the slightest. Thornberry is one of the PRIMARY reasons they got slaughtered in the last election. Her attempts at explaining Labours second referendum stance are the stuff of political legend for how to get any and everything wrong. People will be watching her public performances in the 2019 GE for decades to come as prime examples of what not to do when you are being quizzed on the TV. And yet here she is. Still in a Shadow cabinet position. Beyond any rational comprehension unless you believe Labour don't ever want to be elected again. I know I have joked before about Starmer being a secret agent for the Tories but the reality is that he is their best weapon. He handed them the 2019 GE and now has got the Tories with an 18% lead over Labour in the latest polls. 18%. That is beyond obsene. And all of this on the back of a Conservative Government being in power since 2010, 130,000 dead from Covid and in the middle of some serious economic merde. Staggering. British politics is currently in the realms of the Twilight Zone.

It was clear to me, Labour's position. 1) Negotiate the best deal they could with Brussels 2) Have a second referendum based on the deal negotiated by Labour 3) Labour would actively campaign against the deal they had negotiated What's not to like Originally posted by Matov

The sympathy vote. That is it. After ten years plus of a Tory Government, all Labour have to offer is this... Last roll of the dice stuff here for Starmer. If he loses this then they are coming for him, big time.

Hopefully George Galloway will be a spoiler. Pathetic Hail Mary from Starmer

It's beyond desperate. And all to defend a constituency by-election after ten years plus of an incumbent Tory Government. Through the looking-glass politics.

Labour will throw everything they have at trying to retain the seat. Our Conservative candidate Ryan Stephenson will be the strong local voice 'Batley and Spen' needs to work alongside the government for the benefit of everyone in the constituency.

Only the part that supports Starmer. The rest will be hoping he loses. That is the point. Labour is disunited. And even if Starmer manages to somehow hold on, so what? That is how this is meant to work. Nothing particularly impressive about not losing a by-election. Naturally, I want Labour to lose because of the lolz that will follow from their current internal civil war going from cold to hot over night and given that it would probably be Angela Rayner taking over, even funnier than Starmer who can at least string a sentence together as opposed to that glorified chav.
