John Sewell certainly was called shovel and I know that Roy Summersbyy was an inside forward but he used to fill in when Alf Noakes was injured and he also took the penalties.

I remember Vic very well and so pleased to know that he's still with us. Cyril Spiers brought him to the club, Ray Potter was another keeper at the time with a young Bill Glazier of course. Bert Howe was one of our full backs along with my favourite Jack Edwards and Alfie Noakes wholl could take unstoppable penalty kicks

........................Then along came Johnny Byrne! and the rest, as they say, is history.....................

I was totally against lampard when he joined Chelsea.what he do....taking Derby from 6th to 6th in the championship and losing play offs. What did he do to deserve top 6 job?

He isn't a world-class manager but we are not gonna get that.

However, saying that...I do think we are built for him to come in and replace roy. What he has done at Chelsea was play the kids. Our under 18 kids are amazing and need a manager that will trust them. He is that. Looks like the older players are being let go for him to do this role also. All the pieces in the puzzle seem to say we will get lampard.

I remember when we signed Johnnie McNichol from Third Lanark. He wasn't born, he was quarried!

McNichol was signed from Chelsea.
Sadly he is no longer with us, he passed away in 2007 at the age of 81.
RIP.

I did see him play at the end of his career with us, alongside the likes of Kember, Stevenson,Bannister,Woodruff,Payne etc.
I heard him referred to as "Blessed Bert Howe" !

Surely Bert Howe was always "Chopper."

Alfie Noakes was my favourite from those days. Not because he was an accomplished footballer but he was a whole hearted one who seemed to relish every moment. He loved to venture forward and play what is much familiar these days, in a wing back position. His penalties were a joy. Hit it so hard you would be an idiot to get in the way.

I have his autograph on Palace letterheaded paper along with all the team of that era, including Byrne, Summersby and Rouse. I got to know Brian Lewis through cricket (he was a very good cricketer) and he got them for me.

For the avoidance of doubt any comments in response to a previous post are directed to its ideas and not at any, or all, posters personally.
