Scotland. poxy football league. And proportionately very few decent football players. Especially when compared to small countries like Portugal, Holland etc.

I am not fully up to speed on all of this but I think I read somewhere that they have never planned their percentage of the national debt into future budgets That would make book balancing quite tricky for them

But it's their choice. Quite. It would kind of be alright if they made their mind up about it. Personally if you're going to continually give the SNP large majorities you're surely c0ck teasing. Just have the vote and make the break.

Scotland does not have a central bank and its deficit is way, way higher than that allowed for new EU entrant nations. Its previous fiscal forecasts were all based on oil being over $100 dollars a barrel (as I write this Brent Crude is trading at just under $52 and will probably never rise much above $60 ever again for a variety of reasons). Personally, I think the SNP can make a strong case for the holding of another referendum given our departure from the EU which Scotland as a whole voted strongly against. Interestingly, or so I am reading the SNP position, they are not actually pushing for another referendum but rather for the power to call one when it suits them. I suspect that they are aware that the political machinations as they are, probably stand them in better stead in terms of voting share because there are no votes to be lost in sniping at England from the side-lines, all whilst comforted by the protection that being part of the Union brings them as opposed to having to be truly judged on their own abilities. With the EU probably being far less willing to accommodate their feckless financial behaviour. Never forget that the Union came into being because Scotland had bankrupted itself. I always think of Scottish nationalism as being akin to people who like wearing a kilt for special events but come a wet, windy workday, prefer the appeal of trousers. All for show rather than the nitty-gritty of making it truly work. Edited by Matov (04 Jan 2021 10.49am) Edited by Matov (04 Jan 2021 10.53am)

I think it was PG Woodhouse who said something like he never met a Scotsman that didn't have a grudge against the English. Interesting that they don't want fiscal independence so if the economy does well the SNP take credit and if it doesn't blame the BOE and the Treasury who are English centric. That's not going to fly south of the border. Independence means independence (now where have I heard a similar phrase like that).
