I would be surprised if we get anyone in.

We are currently 9points plus GD above the drop zone and we have a full 25 man squad.

Due to expiring contracts, we don't really have anyone to sell.

We really need to start renewing contracts ASAP.

From the list someone posted Schlupp, Townsend, Sakho, Benteke, PVA, Clyne, Meyer, McArthur, Mitchell, Guiata, Dann, Cahill, Hennessey, Kelly, Wickham, and Henderson all have contracts due to expire. You can't have 16 players out of 25 leave in one hit.

In terms of cost, 16 players would be around £200m to replace.

In terms of time, you are only likely to get in 4 players in the summer transfer window.

Therefore, you only really want to lose 4 of the players listed. I'd let McArthur, Cahill, Wickham, and Henderson go (due to age and appearances).

I would keep Cahill and McArthur , but let Sakho Wickham, Henderson and (with Regret) Ward go

He is almost 23. Young players for the future are 16-21. He should have been a certainty by now. He is not.

So 22 year olds can no longer improve? Come on now.

Of all those listed with their contracts expiring, I would expect these to go :-

Wickham
Meyer (high earner)
Sakho (high earner)
Henessey (now 3rd choice keeper, won't even make the bench)
Henderson

The rest I can see having their contracts renewed, though players like McArthur, Dann, Cahill will probably only get short (1 year/2 year) deals given their age). That would give us an extra season to refresh the squad more.

Unless our U23 keeper (Oliver Webber) is ready to step up then I can't see us letting 2 keepers go. It is wise to have 3 in your squad.

The way we work, look at people we were linked with a year or two ago. There was that Flynn-Downes or whatever his name was. Those kind of things. We aren't the quickest.

I agree we seem slow to get deals done but tbf regarding Flynn Downes, he had refused to sign a new contract at Ipswich, so it looked like we were in pole position but he got a bad injury which is going to keep him out until the New Year. We do seem to jinx players, injury wise

I think Wayne may well look at moving away. Won’t want to be 3rd choice

Quite possibly, but first we have to ensure we keep Guaita and when Wayne is fit again will he necessarily be no 3? Butland hasn't proved himself yet (although he was excellent in a U23 game I saw him in). I've no idea how RH and his coaching team see things on the Hennessey v Butland front but the length of contract given to Butland may point to their hoping he'll be vying with Guaita for the no 1 position.

In any event Hennessey will surely want first team football so as to keep his no 1 position in the Welsh squad when he's fit again. Question is, which Prem club would give him that?

Noticed no ones talking about unloading Benteke, a month ago folks were lining up to drive him to the airport.

Another Ferguson signing then. We'll probably sign him and pay for surgery.

I've just had a look at the players with expiring contracts on Transfermarkt. I'd sign a couple of these personally.

Ruben Loftus Cheek, if or when he becomes available, we urgently also need defenders with pace, probably got one season left with the present defenders at most

Barring injury the team does not need strengthening in January, which is a notoriously expensive market to buy in.

I'd be very happy with nobody signed if we can get a quality young centre back and winger lined up for the summer, be they free agents on a pre-contract, buy and loaned back to the sellers or even just verbal agreement on a price for a summer deal.

In terms of names it's probably the likes of Sarr and perhaps Tomori or Christiensen at Chelsea. Both at a great age and unwanted by the big clubs it seems.
