we have a real opportunity here to lead the world with compassionate farming.

Agreed.
The ban does not include “ high value “ animals eg race horses as they are well looked after when travelling rather than crammed in together for days on end.

Small farming is doomed. Animal grazing on hills is doomed. But that’s ok because all farmers are c units. Watch the land change and the quality of food dwindle. Then come back and tell us the farmers deserved a spanking. A completely ill informed and prejudiced post that ignores the realities.

Farming is now officially a public good. Think centralised State control. And be very afraid

One plot inparticular, either side of Long furlong is quiet beautiful, sheep, cows in the fields & stunning when the sun is coming up / going down.

From what I've heard on radio 4 & 2 talk spots, the farmers seem pleased to have left EU?

Nobody knows what will happen

They are pretty concerned about what has been stated relating to subsidies. It is all entirely dependent upon the 'public good' point. So far the Government has not impressed and appears no better than the EU

Farmers got a lot less subsidies before the EU, however, they often got a decent price for their produce. The obvious solution is to bring produce direct to the customer. We often buy meat direct from the farmer in the market. It's more expensive but obviously more ethical (which I don't particularly care about) but it's tastier (which I do care about) and healthier. I'm pretty sure co-ops, markets and farmer's markets could actually make farmers fare better than they currently do.
Big farmers will actually suffer, continuing to supply supermarkets, who the f@ck buys non free range eggs anymore? And doesn't everyone drink oat/soya/almond lattes these days? Barely any need for the cheap milk either. So small farms have a future: big farms and factory farms may have to consider change. Particularly when you consider consumer education these days. I just wouldn't buy that crap - it's not ethics, it's taste. I'm not rich but a few quid to enjoy something won't kill me.

Steak and sunshine. All you need.

Then you know better than the small farming community and the farming agribusinesses and the Government, each of whom has it the other way around. Which is nice. I recommend you take your ideas to mid Wales.

Not sure whether you will know him, he farms Venison and occasionally Pork and very tasty it is too. I try and buy in bulk from him and his other half who farms Lamb. A young guy, hard worker and very keen to make the most out of his land.

A helpful consideration of the future there. Perhaps they could adapt like everyone has to in the end. Where I live everyone's a farmer - they do this and alsosell to more 'boutique' type stores. We're obviously far more fancy pants in the West of Ireland than Wales. The issue constantly spoken about here is supermarket prices and middleman prices. Cut them out - go direct to the consumer. Even go online! Such revelations, it's called business and marketing. At the end of the day, farms are businesses and need to think of their business model. If they did that as much as they moan, they'd all be millionaires.

Bloke offered me 8 legs of venison for 50 quid once.

I told him it was too dear.

Living down here does have some advantages. At least you can see them cry.
