It does feel like a purely political move to appease the right of the support. So you'd keep it the same as it is? At best a sweetener for trade, at worst a slush fund for despots. If a slush fund is required it should just be done in the open, not hidden as aid. This doesn't aid anyone except arms dealers, so I wouldn't worry about it.

A few years ago, Ireland managed to get foreign aid back from Uganda. It was something like €4million. The money was spent buying fighter jets.

China has all but wrapped up Africa & is working hard on the rest of the world, throwing bungs to despots stopped being an effective way to do business many years ago. People need to realise we have sleep walked into a cold war with China and we have pretty much lost the fight on this front already.

A good point however do we really want to get into a bidding war with China as to how much money we give a despicable regime? China is actually doing some good in building railways and transport infrastructure in Africa however it comes at a high political price. The Chinese are quite happy to ignore human rights abuses whilst arm twisting the local government to get its way. I think the way we compete is to allow Africa greater access to our markets.

Apparently it is a deal done on not much more than a handshake and not discussed in polite company And a lot of critical voices within the R.O.I who believe they should be able to effectively police their own airspace. Some noises made recently about them maybe buying Swedish jets.
