When I worked in Sri Lanka the locals used to dig big pits in their fields to quarry semi precious stones which they would sell at the roadside. Nowadays if you want a new battery for your car just pop down to visit Wisbech Eagle. A quick rummage in his back garden and hey presto. Edited by Mapletree (30 Nov 2020 10.42pm)

Electric cars are a complex algorithm. Battery technology is improving massively, giving faster charging, improved range and reduced cost. Battery technology and how the electricity to charge the vehicles is generated are big factors. It is no good charging your vehicle from an oil-fired power station source. And the major thing for me as a sometimes pedestrian, is that you can't hear the fcking electric cars coming. Edited by Forest Hillbilly (07 Dec 2020 10.49am)

Good point about weight. Cars seem to be getting bigger hopefully manufacturers will reverse this trend.

Electric cars without a sound generator will not gain Type Approval. Admittedly, in my case, it can and does get turned off. To compensate, I drive significantly slower, and in any case the car has autonomous braking together with an audible signal inside, so it's nearly impossible to collide with anything. When reversing, I turn it back on again, which emits a reversing chime, while I keep an eye on the screen, and an ear on the sensors.

All Of you saying that Battery tech is improving and that means the future will see massive battery perfromance improvement and size, I see that as negative. What happens to all of the old Tech batteries? Are they recyclable - limitless? can they be disposed of safely - even if they Are recyclable it doesn't mean they will be recycled. We're just creating a problem for ourselves 20 years down the road. I'm with that fella who said the hydrogen engine is the way to go. Of the three technologies(elec, fossil + hydrogen), its by far the cleanest, and most sustainable.

Then through economics forces and innovative engineering we kept finding more. Now, we are saying that we don't want to use oil anymore. Whilst these are issues, they will be overcome. Just because there are problems, doesn't mean you shouldn't do anything.

Yep agree with that, but electric cars are being sold as the answer to being green - and good for the environment. They are a good immediate fix but one that may not be sustainable in their current guise. Batteries are all well and good, but they will need disposing of at some point - just like current Car batteries!

The Earth is powered by the sun. Includes the Earth's and moons orbit. This dictates time and tides. Dinosaurs lived for millions of years on Earth until the comet crash. Mankind has been around for around 5000 years, but we have put people on other space objects, and yet seek to obliterate our own planet. Finking, it fcks you up

And the success of the dinosaurs (google Crystal Palace Park) is the only reason mankind has had access to oil/fossil fuels.

I have a question about electric cars as this is where motoring is heading. What happens if you live in a flat or a house without parking. How do you charge the battery?
