My prediction, and I have nothing to back this up with except a hunch, is that wages will in real terms get lower and lower. Partially due to automation, partIally due to the huge influx in immigration, partially due to outsourcing. It’s not an easy job market for youngsters to enter, never mind getting on the housing market. The housing market is a strange one. I was thinking that the present rules were generally made with the anticipation of 2 people buying a house together.

There has to be council houses like there was when we were young. No government's going to do it though. Even though they could do it when we were even more skint than now. No will to house people and probably never will be. Job insecurity and home insecurity the norm, rather than the exception increasingly.

My whole point wasnt to separate jobs for importance. It was that there is now no room to negotiate. Firms have taken the 'minimum' to mean the actual. All on the same rate, good and bad.

My son applied for several jobs a couple of years ago, when he finished Uni ( including Sports Direct! that’s how desperate he was), as he was able to work any days/hours they all seemed keen until they found out he was over 21 and he heard no more. He obtained a job last year at Thorpe Park but was paid less than £8 ph. Enjoyed the job so was willing to go again completed 1 training day but in view of Covid was not required and missed out on being furloughed by a couple of days. Applied for farm work/ supermarkets earlier this year, heard nothing.

When I first started at the Met, there were approx 5,000 plus married quarters around the metropolitan police district plus thousands of section house accommodation for single officers. This was an enticement to officers from out of London to come here and be given service quarters. By the time I left, 10 years later in 1997 most of that accommodation had been sold off and by now I should imagine it has all gone. Selling the family silver (including council houses) has been a government trait for years and years. Then of course you had PFI which is effectively robbing Peter to pay Paul and always has been although no government could actually see it and also have the fore sight to see that they are now of course paralysed by extortionate rentals. All the time government owned property and huge gold reserves they had the whip hand. The conservatives mostly to blame for PFI and selling public property, Labour to blame for giving our gold away. Neither party can hold their heads up. I agree that public sector housing is a good way forward but it is simply too expensive to reintroduce.

Recheck the PFI. yes the Tories started it but labour ran amok with it tbh.

Ask dom why he wanted to get rid of it then,Uber are indeed wiping the floor with the taxi game, but the games over, its a race to the bottom, but has a knock on effect, nobody in their right mind will pay 70k for a new electric taxi, so the game will disappear, taxi drivers will retrain as sparks and plumbers, bringing your game down, and you already told us you have taken a 20& drop in salary, so with lots more plumbers around it can only do more damage - although you do all earn 120k a year so plenty of scope for a decrease!
